Hey folks,
A while back I bought an ADK TC, partly at Dot's recommendation. I love it on my cello. I also bought a Vienna recently, but it doesn't compare with the TC on this instrument at least.

Here's a recent example where I used the TC on the cello (everything else is sample libraries):

Thanks for the kind words, folks. And thanks Dan for the recommendation of the TC. It's funny that JP Gerard seems sometimes to be pushing the Hamburg and Vienna over the TC (which he calls "peaky" in the highs) on the ADK forum. Maybe that's because the H and V are his own design? I agree that the TC is bright, and I think the Vienna is a good mic, but the TC has a nice coloration that the Vienna doesn't have.

I use the Hamburg all the time.

My TC mainly collects dust...you know, it would if it weren't in such a nice protective case. Wink

Wow, that does sound nice.

Bit of a coincidence as I'm asst engineer on a gig today, recording a cellist, viola and violinist. Have never recorded either instrument before Eek and with I had that ADK to take with me.

I'm just taking my 414B-ULS and KM184 and see what happens.

Again, nice job Smile

So in your opinion, the protective case improves the sound?

Excellent sound and performance. Kudos. This is beautiful.

As soon as my TC arrived, I had no desire to use the Hamburg at all.

Popman won that mic, correct? Maybe that's why he hears it differently. The TC annihilates the Hamburg imho.

I happen to have a glass of chardonay in my hand and just listened. Wonderful, beautiful piece. Thank you. The cello was very rich sounding-liked it a lot. I thought there was a bit of low end muddyness in the piano sound. I'm in the middle of a string quartet project myself. It's a whole other ball of rosin compared to the usual drums, guitar and bass stuffin. Nice job man.

Will Do! Well, I can say while SLOW - 2 songs in 2 days - I'm very happy with the sound of the Cello and violin and actually have a pretty humorous anecdote to go along with the session but I'll share more on that later.

Anyways, Viola comes later on an OD session. I'm going to try and get the Lead to cut me some snips just to run by all the peers but that's all I'll get. The album is nearing completion and there's no way I'll get a complete track.

The girls were good players but very green re studio work (both girls were in their early 20's Wink)

But, so far so good. 414B-ULS worked out great on the Cello and while the KM184 was a little thirstier for gain, seemed to work too Smile

Anyways, not trying to hijack the thread. I'm just still pretty excited about getting the gig!

Again, nice job on your gig. I listened again with the sound of strings fresh in my ears and your work sounds great!

Cheers

Thanks. If you can post a little clip, I'd love to hear it.

FYI, over on Gearslutz somebody was saying that Jim Williams (audioupgrades.com) does an amazing mod on the 414B-ULS. And ISTR Lynn Fuston recommended KM84 on cello.

Why would that make me hear the two differently?

They're very different sounding mics. Speaking of "qualities"...not "quality". I'd rather play a Mexi Strat than a $4k PRS. Duh...I like the Fender sound. No handmade Dragon or whatever sounds anything like it. Get what I'm saying?

Yeah. I get what you're saying and can relate! My idea, right or wrong was that just maybe the fact that you didn't choose it or pay for it jaded the way you appreciate and respect it. It's a vibe thing.
No matter. This song sounds great.

Very beautiful recording. I love the reverbs you used.
Cello is my favorite of all the classical instruments. However, I like a little darker tone. I feel the cello shines best when it "broods".

Thanks very much, Allen. The reverbs were impulse responses in Space Designer.

Individual instruments do differ in tone, and there's also the matter of the mic and preamp used and any EQ applied. My cello is a bit on the bright side. But I like it! Of course, it's all a matter of taste.
