This may be a little OT. Our Drummer uses an SM-57 for live vocals. He insists on singing into it off axis because otherwise it gets in the way and he hits it with his sticks. He's willing to buy a better suited mic but he's dead set aginst a head set.
What would be a good mic for this situation? Rocky |

If you weren't afraid of putting it on stage, a BLUE Dragonfly would be pretty handy, since it has that movable capsule (so you could point it out to the side and angle the capsule toward the drummer). An Audix SCX25 would also be good for its size and the fact that it's a side address mic. However, both of those mics are expensive.
Audix also has a line of miniature microphones (the M1244, for example). Those are a bit cheaper. I might try an Oktava MC-012 with some sort of a pop screen on it. Although not side address, they are really small. I'm actually not a fan of those mics, so I was surprised that I was able to get a good vocal take using one. However, it was pretty sensitive to pops. Wait a minute. I'm glad I kept writing. The EV ND468 could be exactly what you need. It is small and has a movable capsule (like the Dragonfly). It's also much cheaper than the other mics I've listed (except the Oktava), and it's a dynamic mic (doesn't require phantom power). All the others I've listed are condensers. It doesn't have the world's most lovely sound, but it should do the trick with a little boost to the presence area (6-8 kHz). |

Sounds to me like the problem is placement more than mic selection.
For drummers I either put a boom stand directly behind them with a goose neck coming straight down in front of their mouth from over their heads, or put a boom stand off to their left (about the same distance as the hi-hat stand) fully extended to maximum height, with the boom angled sharlpy down to their mouth, so that they can play the hats under it. _____________________________________________ "Human beings, almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so." -Douglas Adams, Last Chance to See |

James, great ideas. The EV could be a great solution but it's not really a vocal mic. I should give it a listen though. I like the movable capsule concept.
Vox, I've tried several position options and he still ends up hanging the mic high and pointing it down. Thanks for the input. Rocky |
