Well its been 8 months in the making but its finally here. This new product is basically just 4" rigid fiberglass stuffed into a specially fitted "bag" and Velcroed shut. They are light enough to be mounted on mic stands. That way you can set them up as an instant vocal booth. They can also be hung on the wall and in the corners just like a picture.

They sell for $65 each and come in boxes of 3.

I can sell just the bags for the DIY people for $30.

Those do indeed look very interesting.

If I don't end up just doing DIY when I get a new house with a room I will look ya up.

Nick,

Do these work well as bass traps?

Yes Skeetch, these are EXCELLENT low f absorbers. I have 4 of these I got from Nick, and they are very good. The 703 is a very good bass trapping material, they have to be slightly away from the walls though. If you are using them against the wall, out a few inches.
If they are in the corners, you leave them away from the 2 wall sides a bit also.

Here's a shot of some 703 absorbers that my buddy and I put together with his wife's sewing machine and a little wood work.

The 703 panels are 2" thick.
The wood framed "bass trap" in the corner is 5" thick.
They work really well.

Yeah Dudge, thats the idea. Simple is good.

Yes these are great bass traps. Its just that the term bass traps seems to get misused (I've been guilty of it in the past) so I chose to call them broadband absorbers. The truth is, the only thing that absorbs sound anyway is the insulation (besides foam). The cheapest way to house the insulation is with textiles. The thicker the insulation the better the low end absorption. It has to do with the 1/4 wavelength. One guy at StudioTips made this little chart to compare the Sabins/$ ratio. This is with the DIY kit price of $42 ($30 bag + $12 insulation)

***These are estimates, not actual test data***

I could export but it would be way too expensive for it to make sense. I can sell just the bags for $30 and you could find your own insulation. I can even help you with that.

I'm working on a large color pallet but this first run was just tan and black.

The Acoustic "cloud" I built over my console (in picture below) is the functional equivelent of Nick's new product but with a wooden frame and vibey fabric for looks (as well as a price point well over $30)

Nick has probably done more research on this than I, but it might be interesting to try 705 which is basically double thick 703 with an aluminum backing, which I understand to be better at low end absorption and the expense of a little of the high end absorbsion. Should fit right into his bags.

For anyone that has never checked out rigid fiberglass based absorption, you are really in for a treat. Its amazing how well it works for such a small cost.

I figured that exporting them would be too expensive. Any idea what the shipping costs for the bags would be? And what kind of insulation should I get? I saw Ronan's comment about rigid fiberglass, is that the best for light weight stuff? I was actually considering building a vocal booth, but if this (something like your first pic) will do the job, I'm much better off.

Owens Corning 703 or 705 type compressed fiberglass, or Roxul mineral wool (the same type of thing using a different material) are the best insulation types to use, and are similar in their sound absorbtion qualities. They both come in different thickness to suit your needs.

Yeah RCM, the beauty of the bags is that you can put any rigid insulation in them you want. I'd love to see test results of 703, 703 FRK, 705, 705 FRK, and mixtures of all of those. The 705 might make for cleaner looking edges but would be twice as heavy and twice as expensive. I would like to see what the membrane would do for the specs though. When I save a little doe I'm going to the acoustics lab and have a bunch of differnt samples tested.

I'm guessing that they weigh <1lb. So figure a box of three would weigh 5lbs max. I'd probably use a 12x12x4-6" box. Just go to FedEx.com and get rates. I haven't really shipped anything over seas so I really have no idea how much it would cost. Dudge is right about the insulation though. Any rigid fiberglass or mineral wool will yeild very similar results,

Hey Nick, thanks for replying (and you Dudge, for elaborating on the rigid fiberglass). According to FedEx this type of package would cost a minimum of $77 or something...

I do think that's a lot though. I once ordered some pick-ups (which aren't exactly 5 lbs) but that only cost me $17.50. Anyway, for 77 bucks I'll pass - which is too bad, rather buy something for 30 dollars than do it myself.

Yeah $77 is quite a bit. Is it cheaper to have things shipped from US or Europe? This is only a question too, not really leading to any suggestion. I know everything you guys buy is more expensive because of shipping.

I built my own 703 absorbers, but this bag thing sounds like a great idea. I just built a simple square wooden frame and covered them in fabric. They go up like pictures. The frames keep them about an inch off of the wall. I don't know how hard it is to make the bag, but it seems really cool.
