Although Apogee are considered one of the High End converters, RME's stuff is also well regarded (I know DOT likes em).

My question is, is the AD-I 8 Pro as good as the older AD-8000, as I believe the RME is a couple of years newer technology, or is the Apogee still better? I think it's possible to get used RME's cheaper than used AD-8000's?

Cheers

bump.

I'm also interested in hearing some opinions.

I would like to add in the RME Fireface 800 to the discussion. Are the converters on that box even in the same league? I would imagine that they are largely based on the ADI-8 series, but you would figure they had to cut cost somehow...

I am interested in how the Fireface and Rosetta 800 would compare. I have been having trouble with my ISA 428 ADC. If I leave it on for too long (a couple of hours), it gets too hot and starts to make a little crackling noise. Not good.

I'm thinking of either keeping my MOTU 828mkII and swapping the ISA ADC for a Rosetta 800 to go into the ADAT port. I have the Rosetta 200 into the SPDIF also, and love it. I just use the 828mkII analog outs for my headphone monitor mixes.
I don't record anything with the convertors in the 828.

Or, I would also consider The Fireface 800 in place of the 828mkII, if the RME convertors are at least as good or better than the ISA ADC, and have the Rosetta 200 for two more channels of better conversion. This would mean changing from the MOTU Cuemix (which I'm used to) to RME's Totalmix software, too. I'm not clear on the Totalmix, though it looks very flexible. Can you do four different monitor mixes?

I saw a thread on another site where someone compared the Fireface 800 to the Rosetta 800 with clips, and a lot of people either couldn't tell the difference or preferred the Fireface.

Would the Fireface be good enough, in the convertor dept. to send elements of the mix out for analog processing? Would you think it would be good enough to do analog summing through a Folcrum?
These are the questions I'm asking myself.

AD-8000s WERE considered high end. Even if you ask Apogee now, they would say their current lowend eclipses the 8000.

Old digital is not like old analog. It doesn't get better the further back you go.

Yeah, I realise that their entry level stuff is now better than the AD-8000, but is the RME stuff better?

I would think so.

Sure wish that I could find a dealer to let me demo the new RME 8-channel, remote controlled mic pre/AD with direct outs, MADI, etc.

I WANT to like RME stuff, but the only ones in my geographical market are the budget home studio guys, not the pro/corporate guys.

On the flip side, most of the pro guys have to have specific things to attract/keep business. I work full time for a church now, doing radio and TV work. I don't care what name is on it, as long as it works, is the right price, etc.
