BTW, you guys have really nice setups. I enjoy seeing how different your rigs are, or how some gear runs common.

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. A couple of no name rock bands until I started one called Tundra. We got a production/mgt. deal to record and ended up for more than a year every night at the Hit Factory in NYC. This is 1970 we're talking about. Mezzosphinctaurous Age.

Moved to PA. More bands, moved to Florida, more bands.

Finally started working at Ace Music of Miami and learned about recording from a few of the guys that used to hang around there. After winning enough bonus bucks for a Tascam 4 track, it's been a passion ever since.

Now I have a two car garage full of stuff.

Tascam DA88/SY88, DA38,
Yamaha 02R mixer with TC Elec Unity card
Masterlink
G4 dual 1.25 with MOTU 2408 mkII and DP 3.11
alot of midi stuff - M1, JV2080, Procussion, etc.
Lucid GenX wordclock generator
Yamaha DMP11 sub mixer
Peavey VMP-2
Joemeek VC3 and C2
Alesis Wedge
Lexicon LXP1
Avalon VT-747
Empirical Labs Fatso
SPL Transient Designer 4
TC Elec Gold Channel and M3000
RNC
UREI 546 eq
Behringer Ultrafex

Mics:
CAD E-300, AKG C535 and C4000b, Oktava MK319, NTK, MXL V67, AT4051, Alesis (Groove Tubes) AM11, SM57's and 58's, Beyer M260 with DX mod, Crown and Radio Shack PZM's, ATM25, 2 Sennheiser 421's, 2 Behringer ECM8000's, AT Pro 25, a buch of older Audio Technica's and Shure's.

BUT NEED MORE MONEY!!! API and Neve-type preamps, Stephen Paul and Soundelux microphones, Distressors and ELOP's are calling me!

I'm Kevin Kemp, I started messing with recording when I was 14. this was back around 69. I had a Fender Strat at the time and a Radio Shack two track tape recorder that did sound with sound recording. I eventually quit playing. I took up guitar again around 1990. I tried playing keyboards for a while but that didn't work for me. Around that same time I wrote a midi sequencer program called Cadenza. It's was pretty successful till my distributer decided he would write his own sequencer. That move put us both out of business. Anyway I started playing guitar again. I tried electric, acoustic and classical. I've kinda stuck with the electric. A year and half ago I decided to learn to play drums and I've been taking lessons ever since. So, I guess I sort play guitar, bass and drums and try singing. I'm not great at any of them. But I have a lot of fun with it. Anyway, Since I've always had the desire to record, I started in the late 80s while I was trying to play keyboards. I had a Yamaha MT100. A major piece of crap! Around 94 I got a Turtle Beach Quad Studio (Tahiti) and sync'd it with Cadenza using SMPTE. Hey, it was a start!. Well, of course things just got better. Later winter I had nother better to do and created a website with articles intended to help other people who were getting into home recording.

So, anyway I mostly record myself and friends and my daugthers. My oldest daughter is currently a junior at Boston Conservatory. She's studying Musical Theatre there.

As for equipment, this is what I collected over the years...

-De-esser-

-Effects (reverb, delay etc.)-

Yamaha SPX-990, Boss GT-3 Guitar Effects Processor

Marshall Bluesbreaker Distortion Pedal, Dunlop Cry Baby

-Monitoring-

Yamaha NS-10M

Yamaha Model P-2200 Power Amp

Behringer HA-4000 Headphone Dist. Amp

AKG KM240M, AKG 141M(2) and Sennheiser MD-280 Headphones

Marshall JCM 2000 DSL-401 Guitar Amp, Peavey TNT-160 Bass Amp

That's it.

Oh, and I wrote a DMP3 review for Mojo Pie.

Hi Guys,

I am Jose Espinosa. Im a mexican-american currently living in London. I recon I am primarily a recording engineer, and then a musician. I basically learned to play so I could communicate with the musos.

I own sisterbelle studios - which is 50% for my musical projects and 50% for commercial projects. I also freelance engineer here in london and in the US. I record and play mostly 40s 50s and 60s style music (Garage, rockabilly, western swing, hillbily, C&W, Blues, Jump Blues, Doo wop, etc.).

I am a vintage head by preference, but have recently moved more and more towards DAW based recording. My list:

Just saw this posting.
Well here goes. Grew up in California-moved to Reno NV in 1972. Made my first recording singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with my sister when I was four(still have the tape). Mom had a BA in music and taught piano at home. I started at six, quit at ten to dig fox holes and play army. Always had classical, folk, show tunes on the magnavox. Dad was a Persian immigrant so I heard that microtonal stuff too. Played clarinet from 4th grade to high school, but quit when somebody gave me a cheap Framus guitar when I was sixteen. First song--House of the Rising Sun. Second recording was me taking moms Wollensak tape recorder (brought home from school) and sticking the mic up to the TV speaker when the Beatles came on Ed Sullivan in jan.1964. Mom taught us Americana folk songs, steven foster, irish, scotish, english stuff. Sang in chorus all through school. My favorite band in the sixties was the byrds. Loved that harmony. Started jamming with friends around 1968 morphing into various folk, country rock bands. Began playing gigs. A marvelous time-no MTV. It was a special event (among your peers) when you hit the stage. I ended up being the PA guy so I began learning about mics, amps, etc. A friend gave me his ancient tube Magnacord two track recorder and I started to record gigs. Heavy--the motors could have run a go-cart. Later I picked up a cassette deck and a pair of sony ecm22s. Got lucky in 1976 hooking up with George Frayne of Commander Cody fame, touring nationaly and recording an album at the record plant in Sausalito CA. I regret not paying more attention to the recording process because I was more interested in jamming, beer, and getting layed. But I remember being amazed watching an engineer editing, splicing two inch tape. When the Cody thing ended I came home got married, had a kid. Played locally for a few years, ended up in a casino band and hated it. I had always played in original bands. Ran sound at a casino for five years, was layed off so I went to Radiology Technology school, got the degree and have worked at a hospital ever since. Good dough Joe. All through this I have continued to play gigs with friends, loving it. I'd rather play a fun gig for free(and do) than a boring one for a thousand bucks. I had used a Teac 3340 and had picked up a tacsam portastudio in the mid seventies for song demos but in 1994 I decided to put a together a more serious studio. Got a fostex 1/4" 8 track, studiomaster board and various ancilary gear. I have been improving my set up ever since. Today I use a Yamaha aw4416, focusrite penta, baby bottle, at4031s, sen.421s,441, shure 57,58,akg d112,c3000, and various efx, processors. Over the years I have educated myself reading, F. Alton Everests "Handbook of Multichannel Recording", then assorted mags like Mix, EQ, and Home and Studio Recording. I released my own solo cd in 1999 and am currently on my third (a friends) cd project this year. While I am reasonably serious about my recording, the music is what speaks to me. I'm more into songlust, than gearlust.
And I have to admit at 54, maxing my 401k instead of maxing my headroom takes precedance. Ahh lifes compromises.

Hey I used to have that magncord rtr - I think it was the PT6? man i loved that thing. It taught me my first lesson about tube voltages. The hair on my arm did eventually grow back.

My story. I'm primarily a musician. A guitarist of the jazz variety. Had a "deal" a few years ago that I hated. Had a great band, many of those folks I still play with. Released some albums. Moderate, mainly local success. Still play. I also write music. Been recording, in one fashion or another, since the mid 70s.

Put an Adat studio together in the early 90s. I also got 8 channels of Millennia Media mic pres, which of course haven't devalued. Quickly got rid of the Adats and got Digital Performer. Entered a partnership with a larger studio that was tape based. I was the digital section. I continued to record my own music, but then became interested in recording other people. It was a little financially rewarding. I no longer have a partnership in that studio, but he continues to cut me phenomenal deals if I want to record myself or bring in clients.I may never be able to afford the mics, pres and compressors. At this point, why bother?

But my own studio now is built around DP 4.11. Ive just put together a remote recording setup with Powerbook and Metric Halo boxes.

I forgot that this was a "what's your deal?" thread, rather than a "what's your gear?" thread. Sorry. So more and more I'm interested in production and engineering. I have great ears and writing/arranging ability. I fall short in the technology department when it comes to trouble shooting engineering stuff. I'm not one who loves to tinker with gear. I like results and producing music. So, luckily over time I've been able to experience enough to the point where I know enough to troubleshoot. But it's frustrating. That's why I like all the great gear! I don't HAVE to be a genius to make something sound good. But I've been fortunate to be around some amazing musicians, engineers and gear through the years. It all helps. To what end I'm still trying to discover!

So in the year since I originally posted this I've indeed been doing a lot more producing of projects, jazz for the most part, for others. I've also been doing a lot of high quality remote recordings with my Metric Halo, Powerbook and Millennia mic pres. Always fun!

All the best,

Henry Robinett Big Grin

Hey, Henry--

For what it's worth, I'm a jazz composer and pianist down in San Diego, and for some reason I've heard your name once or twice over the years. I can't recall the context but I'm sure it was positive. Just wanted to let you know that your legend has spread successfully. Wink

I feel like an idiot posting this after you guys with some pretty kick-ass set-ups, and, no doubt, talent. But here's my story;
Started playing guitar. Got pretty good at it. Played in a few bands that didnt really work out. Started singing, playing bass, some piano, some violin, and got more into song writing. I decided that I wanted to record myself playing guitar and singing and thought it would be easy. Bought a Tascam 788 Digital recorder and a SM58. Realized I it was DEFINITELY NOT easy! Started looking into mics and preamps to make my recording better. Then I got the best advise of my life. A friendly Sam Ash employee(I know, hard to believe)brought me and my few hundred dollars that I was ready to spend, into the Book section of the store, and told me to spend it there instead. Spent a bunch on books on recording, tracking, mixing, etc,...and read them all twice. Bought some more books, read Them twice. Then said to my self, "Tony, you are not going to buy a single fucking thing until you can make this shit sound good with what you have". This is where I fully learned to appreciate the very underestimated and complicated world of,...MIC PLACEMENT. A few years down the road, hanging out at a friend of a friends Big Studio,...I realized I have a pretty good set of ears. Started upgrading my system. Made some demos for free, got paid for a few. Recorded some of my work,...Now I have this Custom DAW;
-P4 2.4C 800Mhz FSB/ P4P800 MoBo
-1 40Gb HD for apps
-1 80Gb HD w/8mb cache for audio
-1 Delta 1010 SoundCard
-Cubase SX
-Windows XP Home
MICS
-2 SM57's
-1 SM58
-1 ECM8000
-2 MC012's
-1 SP C1
-1 MD 421
-1 SP B1
-Soon to be aquired Cad M177, & MXL V69ME
MIC PRE's(I only use the VTB-1 & GR)
-GR 1NV
-SP VTB-1
-Audio Buddy
EFFECTS
-Lexicon MPX-500(Soon to be sold for a UAD-1)
-FMR RNC Compressor(for trcking)
-Joe Meek MC2 Compresor(for tracking)
ROOMS
-Seperate Control room and Recording room
-Recording room is about 17'x15'x9' Semi Treated
It is VERY HUMBLE, and cant compete with you guys, but It allows me to do what I Love to Do, and I think I work with what I have pretty well.
Oh, btw, my monitors are Carvin SRS6.5A Actives. They are probably not held in high regard, but I know them well. I like the Contour switch that kinda boosts the highs and lows to emulate standard car radios and such. They are not much of a bottleneck anymore, as I know them very well now and compensate accordingly. The only downfall to ME is that they dont go under 50hz. Anyway,...that's my recording story.

Hi guys!
Well I ve been playing guitar for 40 years - finally getting good! I played mostly in small club bands - rhythm and a little lead guitar, with backing vocals. Played mostly blues and R&B. Picked up some mandolin along the way in a folk group too.
I got into recording 12 years ago because my ex wife (then wife) was a good singer and I wanted to make some demos of stuff I had written. Started with a Tascam 4 track cassette, and slowly moved up.
Now I have a VS 2400cd, VTB 1 pres and RNC compressers, and a focusrite pre and compressor combo. Mics are C1, and some AT large and small diaphragm condensers, and the old SM58. All in a very crowded spare bedroom.
Play a Taylor 814 acoustic, and a Carvin DC 200 electric. I also do a little on keys with a Korg Trinity.
When I turned 50, ahem, I got into Celtic guitar in DADGAD tuning, and I feel I have found my niche musically, I went from a mediocre blues player to a GOOD fingerstyle player. Never can tell when you will hit upon the right thing, huh?

Coffee

Forever looking for that perfect take...........

My name is Vince but I am known on the internet as FunkyBeat. I have a modest little set-up in comparison to most here, however; my studio fits my needs and is very comfortable and organized. You can see more detailed pics of my studio by clicking on the link in my signature. The first thing that will probably strike you is that I use old ancient gear. Yep! That's me.... I like it... it makes me happy. Applaud

Good day to everyone here!

Been dicking around with tape recorders since I was about 9 or 10. Loved it most when my portable Sear's cassette deck's batteries would get low, thus slowing the tape down.

When I would put new batteries in, up went the pitch of everything previously recorded. Cool! To a 10 year old, this is pretty neat stuff.

So I would save the old, low voltage batteries and replace them when I wanted to make "vari-pitch" recordings.

Nothing has really changed that much.

My musical experience has mostly been based on live work. Played off and on with the same cats since we were all about 18. What we do as viewed by musicians might be construed as "wobbly" or "under-rehearsed" but the 5th member of our band is always, always, always the audience. To cite what we do as "audience participation" is just the start.

My past includes forays into progressive, punk, jazz and some country, all hinged on hardcore Royal Conservatory Piano training.

These days I play guitar a lot more than I should because I don't know what the hell I am doing on guitar. I like open tunings and pina coladas.

Current gear is minimal, including 4-track reel and a mixer. No wait, sold the mixer. Gave back all the speakers I had borrowed. Sold a lot of keyboards (35 down to 3) and sold a lot of microphones and guitars and . .. but happy where I am in a spiritual capacity*

Thanks to our host Dot for this forum.

I like music and stuff.

Right now my focus is on building the business I started. I want to eventually get a small business loan (after 2 years of record-keeping I'm told) and move to being able to record 16 channels at a time all through high end pres and converters.

If I had my druthers I would have my pilot's license and be paid to fly around and engineer's peoples work around the globe.

I've been producing/engineering for about 10 years. I started small, just recording my band as well as other local bands pretty much for free. I get about 90% of my business from word of mouth and that's about all I need. I record a band or two a month and usually they are rock or metal. I've recorded a few rappers and solo artists here and there.
My studio ( The Blue Room ) is located in a coverted part of my house in Disco Bay CA (just outside of San Fran)

I like pictures - but i dougbt ya'll wanna see a pic of my mBox (that's the just of my mac based studio at the moment).

I've worked in the music business in LA for XX years, starting out as a video director for a music school (shoot live performances of guest artists, did some seconding in studios around town (a B-Movie with Linda Blair, did basic tracks for an "ANGELINE" rap track if you can believe that) and various pro demo's and tv commercials.

After that I jumped the fence to work @ geffen records for 12 years (many stories from those times - I hung with Jimmy Page, and accisdently locked Courtney love in the John).

Most recently I produced music download platforms for MTV, BestBuy, Hewlett Packard and others through a company called RioPort. It's defunct now and I have moved to the New Orleans area to spend time with my family, build up a recording rig, and get back to what I love most - making music!!!

---- PS, It's mardi gras here - so instead of studio pics, I'll share this with you -Smile Taken last weekend during the "Krewe De View" parade in the french quarter
