I have finally scheduled a bluegrass session. This could mean a lot of work if I do a good job. Ive done a lot at the tv station I work at but not in the studio would like some advice on what mics ect to use.The first pass will be acoustic bass in my drum booth with aoustic guitar and mandolin. Then overdub lead acoustic lead mandolin parts fiddle and banjo then vocals so what I have to work with

bass he has a pickup my mics are akg d12,a marshall 77 with a peluso 47 capsule, and a oktava 219 with the Jolley mod, actually the one in his picture I think

acoustic guitar two oktava 012 with the jolley mod a nady ribbon with the jolly mod, lundhal transformer maybe the 219

mandolin, any of the above.how many

fiddle any of the above how many

banjo ribbon

I am going to trac through a focusrite 428 and a sytek so I think Im ok there. BAsically wonder if Im covered with mics appreciate any help I think the acoustic is my biggest worry, really wonder if I need another sdc like a peluso and maybe use it with the ribbon or just two sds's

My friend,Charlie Cushman, (besides being one of the best bluegrass banjo players in town) does a lot of rhythm guitar work in the studio and on stage. His preference in studio is 2 KM184s, one at the 12th fret and one at the bridge. Out of your options, the 012s seem like the way to go.

I agree with the ribbon on banjo

Ribbon or tube LDC on fiddle

A bright sounding mandolin would probably sound good with the ribbon, but using two SDCs would work if it sounds good as is.

I came across this article recently that might be of interest:
