I'm utterly baffled at the general opinion regarding smoking. I don't smoke, but it's a bar, for God's sake. That's what your supposed to expect. It's a den of iniquity where people are going to indulge in all of the minor vices and sins denied to them during their mundane workdays. You can wreck your liver, ruin your hearing, get into a fight, and pick up an STD, but somehow smoking is unacceptable? Sheesh. We've turned into a nation of entitled whiners.

what cover is that? it's got a cool chorus, and the recording is sounding good on the pc speakers at work.

even if they're sub-par, free plugins are always welcome.

It's called "Let's Live For Today," originally done by The Grass Roots. Look them up...you'll be suprised by what you find out.

Ian: Great job on the the song.. very cool. I think it sounds really good. What was most of it recorded with? Especially the drums?

First off, thanks to all for the compliments. I've been working my ass off trying to improve my mixing and it seems to be paying off.

Second, the Drums were actually a pretty simple setup...

Everything was recorded at our rehearsal space into Pro Tools LE through a 001 (with a Tascam somethingorother running into the lightpipe fer 8 extra ins).

The inputs for the drums looked like this:

Kick In - ATM25->PreSonus M80
Kick Out - TLM103->M80
Snare Top - SM57->M80
Snare Btm - SM57->M80
Toms - C4-> PreSonus Tube Pre (x3)
OH - 451-> M80
------------------------------

I was actually suprised by the M80. It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread or anything, but it'd be a great used buy sort of thing. If you could get one for a grand or less, it wouldn't be a bad deal. Fairly clean, not anemic...like I said, I was suprised.

It also helped a lot that I was micing up a GMS kit with Zildjian cymbals and a good drummer. I could have used tin cans and string and pulled it off...

So I'm bringing this one back...the guys over at Harmony Central did a LOT of digging and since I found this thread, I've DOUBLED the number of lugs I have available. There are some really killer ones to be found...a guitar amp suite that has a pretty believable JCM900 plug...the Blockfish stuff is all realy good and I've been using the SHIT out of it...I found a Leslie sim called Spinner that sounds pretty solid, if a little flat compared to the real deal...but what does it matter when it costs nothing?

Hey i.Combs,

I still think those are some great plugs, unless you don't have the $ to get into over 1K outboard compressor realm. They have a bunch of new plugs on their site now, my fave is 1176me. FISH plugs are very good too, I've been a using them for a long time now. Honestly I don't pay attention to amp & cab sim plugs any more, I think they all suck, unless you are not into some contemporary sound or something unique.

The sim plugs are SO handy when I'm demoing tracks (which I'm doing TONS of as my band is well into writing a new album...and even more considering one of our guitar players--of course it'd be the one that sang a bunch, too--just quit, leaving me a bunch of rhythm guitar duties for the recording). And, I'll counter your "contemprary or unique" jab with this mp3.

This track went from zero to done in about 2 hours

Hey Mad, just a question about your comment "could we be witnessing the Behringer of plugins?" You could mean that in a good way or a bad one. Which is it? haha. I only ask because I have a VAmp 2, so I just wanted to ask. Thanks!

Actually...it's funny that this has come back up. I've had the opportunity to play with the Waves SSL bundle, as well as a lot of the URS comps and EQ's...which, sadly, leave the Antress stuff in my plugins folder, untouched. They were a neat novelty, and I'm 100% guilty of being excited cuz it was free. That said, I still did those mixes with those plugins. But I've just had more success with better tools.

I don't know about URS... they were OK, but nothing sensational.

Waves SSL, V & API are the best plugs I've ever used. Waves did a very good job on these. Out of 3 SSL is the most workhouse plug, you can just through the comp & EQ on each track I mix it. Too expensive Frown
