I want to sit down & track some work in front of my monitors.

It's about 35-40ft distance. I either have to get a guitar cable that long or move my amp to the next room & run a long speaker cable.

So which one is better?

long speaker cable.

If I understand correctly, due to the way instrument cable is shielded (due to the low voltage signal's susceptibility to RF and other forms of interference), long runs of unbalanced, low voltage instrument cable tend to degrade your signal more than speaker cable...we're talking the difference in scale between millivolts from the guitar to the amp to full volts coming out of the speakers.

Even though speaker cable does have it's own capacitance issues...the scale is FAR different...

I've personally run speaker cable 50 feet in some tracking situations and I wouldn't dare do that with instrument cable.

As a side note...working that way...in front of your workstation...is REALLY, REALLY nice. If I've got the choice, it's the way I prefer to do overdubs...I like being left the hell alone while I track that stuff.

I'm utterly baffled at the general opinion regarding smoking. I don't smoke, but it's a bar, for God's sake. That's what your supposed to expect. It's a den of iniquity where people are going to indulge in all of the minor vices and sins denied to them during their mundane workdays. You can wreck your liver, ruin your hearing, get into a fight, and pick up an STD, but somehow smoking is unacceptable? Sheesh. We've turned into a nation of entitled whiners.

I'm not sure which is better but I would (and did) get a long speaker cable that is very thick.

This allows you to keep the head within arms reach, which for me makes it the only choice.

+1 on a long speaker cable. That's pretty long for an unbalanced instrument cable.

You can also use a buffer with a long instrument cable. This will make up for the loss of using a long cable. Any Boss pedal will have a buffer circuit but there are much better choices. Also if you have a guitar with active pickups there is really no need to worry about the long cable.

Monster cable has to be the biggest scam in audio...and that's coming from a lunatic that owns $700/meter speaker cables.
