So, it seems like the time to sort out my room. Thankfully I'll be moving out of my university accomodation tomorrow so back to rooms that I can actually do something with... and a house full of different sizes and shapes! I need to convince myself that this is a step worth taking (alright... I don't really need much convincing). I don't suppose anybody has any test clips of Before-After audio files concerning their room? Would be quite interesting.

I don't have any clips that demonstrate the before/after effect but the difference was enormous, mainly on MIXING. The time it took me to get the bass to tranlate went down dramatically.

Essentially, I used to have to run around and test the mix on my car stereo, home stereo, wherever, and I'd have to make adjustments to the bass/low mids because the room I was mixing in didn't allow me to hear them properly.

Now, that's gone. Pretty much what I hear on my monitors is what I get in any system, *overall*.

My website has some photos of my room treatment process. It took me about $700 to do the whole room.

This might not be the best example, because it's not the same room, but this kinda shows what I've been getting out of room treatment.

This tune was recorded in my old house, in a very untreated room:

This was recorded recently in my new room, which I've done a lot of work to.

http://www.chriscefalu.com/Good_News_Never_Knocks_At_Midnight.mp3

Both are solo tunes that use the exact same equipment - same guitar, mics, etc. Neither have much processing done to them (the 2nd tune is exactly as it came off the "board" in fact).

The first one has that boomy dullness that I could never get rid of when I recorded in untreated rooms.

I don't have any before and afters from the new room because it was completely unsuable before.Smile

For all links right click and save, or copy and paste the link. If that doesn't work you can always just go to chriscefalu.com and click on the tunes directly.

Unfortunately, I don't have any before and afters.

But something very interesting I did notice is that I was about to buy a new microphone, because I wanted a more stable, defined, solid image. One day, after treatment, and with significant goboing using 703-based gobos, I noticed the same mic had a much more solid image. It's then that I realized that not only taming the boominess and boxiness, I had also taken care of some comb filtering that the mic was picking up, even when partially gobo'd, and in cardio at relatively close range (8"-12").

What you could do, is mix as close as you can wher e you are at, then talk to a local studio with a nice tuned room and take your computer , etc in there and just do the final mixing in there room. I do this here at a friends locally and it works out well. You usually can get a good rate because you just need there space.

I have a before recording up now.
Wildflowers Don't Care Where They Grow Today I am emptying the room where I recorded this of all furnishings to attempt some of the acoustic treatment techniques I have read about here and other places. These include:

Building a wooden stage
Building bass traps in the corners with fiberglass board
Deadening the opposing short sides of the room with blankets and curtains
Using various combinations of bookcases, absorption panels, and curved panels along the walls
Placing a big Salvation Army sofa strategically in the room.

Maybe in a week or two I will have an "after" recording to share.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for but these videos might give you an idea of what a room sounds like before and after treatment.

Check out the "Minitraps Demo" first.
