I have had some fantastic help along the way with many things but now I really need some advice to see if I can pull it all together (hopefully if all goes well it may prove usefull to others as well).
Tonight Im recording my band so Im out there with real kit real men and real balls (ok some may be lacking but its not their fault), now it might all go tits up but lets see. What I am hoping is to do the drums and bass along to a guide track of on one of my songs. Then add guitar and vocals here at home in the project studio... and if needs be some strings (im not a fan of strings although I love the thickness it can create I am concerned its an excuse for me to add them to make up for inadequate bass and dodgy guitars - correct me please on this if I am talking out my arse) Now Ive done bands before but long time ago so this should give me a great opportunity to have recordings of what I need to start messing around with serious acoustic instruments. I'm recording in a room that is not too lively but to my ears has a nice feel to it. I will post up initial recordings and basic mixes on my myspace site once they are complete later and then go through a step by step process. I will try not to compress anything on the way in and save it for the software I only have a focusrite pre - but again im not running out to buy a neve when I feel personally an experienced engineer could do more with my focusrite than i could do with the neve. So its chance for me to start and finish something serious with some help from the fantastic talent on these forums. If you have any initial advice let me know. The kit we are using is a reasonable Peavey set of drum mics (i have an sm58 for the snare) some C1000's as overheads and a direct out plus a bass amp recorded using an SM58 as well. I'm using my RME fireface to do 8 tracks at once, into Reaper. Thats all I got so i gotta do the best with it. The guitar amps (JCM 800 and an Orange OR) will be miked up via a ribbon mic later on, and vocals done with my lovely AKG solidtube. So its going to be a reasonable setup I think. |
