I have been posting on Gearslutz and other MB's hoping someone can help me out (or that Dave Thomas sees this). He's stopped responding to my emails and he's had my mic since October, when I paid for all of the mods-- the CEK-12 capsule, the 2480 transformer and the tube upgrade and capacitor changes. If anyone knows how to reach him or can help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Kojdogg - did you ever get your mic?
I just heard from DT today. Says he had the flu for a couple of weeks, had problems getting parts from Peluso because of equipment failures in his mic lab, and Pelusos computer went down and lost his order for CEK-12 saddles and transformers. Says he's getting ready to move his business out of his basement and into a commercial space, which will be next door to a studio, allowing customers to audition his mics. He's also updating his website to reflect the expansion of his business.
I would think this would be good news for prospective customers. Generally, when a business starts renting commercial space, they realize they need to increase their cashflow to pay rent, which means they get the work done quicker.

Ha, a producer I'm working with ordered (2) CM12's, so those delayed CEK-12 heads might be his Eek But I warned the guy in advance to ordering that he better be prepared to wait...

I'll have to ask him what studio he's moving next door to. I know most of them around here but none of them are out where he lives, so I guess he's going to incorporate a commute, too Smile

Greetings,
I just wanted to report that after 10 weeks I'm being told by Dave Thomas that my APEX 460 pair has been completed and shipped. I ordered the "C-12" mod and needless to say, I'm antsy to get my hands on these mics. It was a long wait with countless reasons (excuses?) why my work took so long, but I was as patient as possible hoping not to irritate Dave. I'll report back on the performance if anyone is interested.

here's the cost rundown...

2 APEX 460s - $400
2 C-12 mods - $890
shipping - $16
total $1306

(2 actual C-12s $10,000?)

cheers!

THE CONTINUING DAVE THOMAS (ADVANCED AUDIO) APEX 460/CM-12 MOD SAGA

My shipment never showed up in the tracking system so I contacted "The Pride of Vancouver," Dave Thomas about it. He actually had the balls to tell me the following.

________________________

>>> Hi Barry, I will have another tracking number for you in the morning once I straighten out the paperwork.
It was sent back from the airport for some reason.

Cheers, Dave.

My opinion of Mr. Thomas is deterioating at light speed. Unless a baby Jesus pops out of one of my new mics an winks at me (when and if they EVER arrive) I'll never do business with Advanced Audio again. I feel like I'm trying to make a 5-year-old eat peas. (After giving him $890.00 to do so.)

Like I told Dave... "I've shipped over 80,000 packages a year for the past six years (that's nearly .5 million shipments if you're keeping score) and I've never had a single one "come back from the airport." (Not to mention the fact that he told me previously that he ships GROUND.) sheesh!

I'm sure glad he doesn't live in my area. I'd have to "pop in" on him sometime and "explain" the concept of honesty and integrity. That would not go well.

TUNE IN NEXT WEEK FOR THE NEXT THRILLING EPISODE OF

"YEAH RIGHT" featuring "The Pride of Vancouver" Dave Thomas of Advanced Audio

I hope a year from now I'll be gleefully tracking with these mics and all my frustration with DT will be a distant memory. Today however, I'd like to wring his neck!

Did you do the CM-12 mod coder?

Did I blow it by sending him my 460s instead of just ordering a couple mics? At the time I didn't realize there were options.

Hey bazz, i live in north van as well and have lost a pair of mics to dt for modding. this was 13 months ago! no email replies, no phone calls, no contact whatsoever. strange. my first dealing with him, about 3 years ago, was excellent. he really knows his stuff. i wonder if life is getting in the way for him right now. it must be something bad for him to put everything to the side. let's hope he comes back.
cheers.

Warning....

Don't send money/mics to Dave.

Don't trust him if you expect timely/competent results.

I have 2 of his doorstops.
Actually, they work pretty well as doorstops.
Pretty pricey for doorstops.

After numerous shootouts, these mics are at the bottom of my list.

Dave.......

WTF???

Thats a real drag..Could be life challenges are catching up to him, dunno....no idea whats up with him...haven't spoke to him in ages.

I found another local guy that can do the mod's if I need anymore work like this. All I have to do is order the parts and he'll do the mod and charge for the labour.

I got about three weeks of these excuses myself, in the end it took about 4 months to get the mic. Sent to the wrong address, a guy ordered at the same time as me, somehow got two mics, wrong postage, some sort of family trouble, on and on, etc., etc.

Anyone reading this thread before buying from this guy. You've been warned!!

This guy takes a LONG LONG time to deliver and he will make every excuse in the book. I feel sorry for him, he seems like a nice enough guy, but you just can't deal with people like that. Unreliable. People talk, and the excuses tend to be the same across the board.

These are good mics when they're finished, but you need to be aware that if he does the mods you're taking your chances. No other business I've ever dealt with operates this way - by all rights he should be out of business.

JUST BE CAREFUL!! It would be smarter to check out the other thread, do the mods yourself or have someone else do them. They appear to be fairly simple.

If I wanted to avoid Dave(which seems like a no-brainer), exactly what would you recommend I do to these to replicate his mod? I know that the cek-12 capsule, the cinemag 2480 and the tube but what specifically should one do to the circuit. I guess I'm looking to get as close to a C-12 as I can(obviously). Does there absolutely HAVE to be a change to the circuit to realize the potential of this mic, or could I get by with just the capsule, tranny and the tube?

I'll be passing this info on to my guy. I know better than to do this myself.

Thanks boys.

all the info you need is already in an active thread re mod'g the 460 and NADY 1050.................

just forward the link to your guy to decipher. The guy who'll I'll get in the future can do this stuff in his sleep and is already regarded as one of the top techs in the city.

Hi Michael, did everything work out and you get your upgraded microphone back from us.

We went through a bad patch and ended up moving.

Our apologies, for any inconvenience that our life crisis might have caused.

We have re-located our small shop to the small town of Summerland BC. Were life is simpler and we can once again put our full time into tube microphones and vintage analogue circuits.

Let me know what I can do for you to make up for this inconvenience.

Cheers Dave

About a month back he stopped responding...well if I emailed him 3 times then he'd respond. Yeah, he seemed to have a positive history that would make you think he'd be reliable. At this point he no longer responds to email. If you've got a number for him I'd love to have it. I should of got it from him initially, but he seem so cool that I didn't think it was needed. Ugh!! I can't believe I have to chase this guy down...but right now I'm out $700...this sucks

And I'm not some anal freak! I've always been really positive with him in my emails until I started posting on forums about this. I'm a profession engineer here in NYC, I've got endorsements with some companies, like Vovox audio cables, I'm really friendly with some really cool guys at companies like Requisite audio in LA, my comments are on their site as well. I've worked with tons of world renowned jazz artists and a lot of prominent underground hip hop records in NYC. Google me I've got a really positive track record...but what it comes down to is that he's got my mic and my money, and I have not yet gotten a sign that I'll be getting any of it as of yet. Sorry for getting on my soap box, but I'm really upset about this!
It kind of has all twisted out of shape, who can you trust out there??

I hope my comments carry some weight with people in the internet community because this guy is treating me like crap. And like you mentioned there's more people out there with similar issues.
