the first of the week Im going to buy two small diaphram condensers primarly for acoustic guitar and of course maybe even for use as overheads. I am considering
shure sm 81,s I can get a great deal on some Ive found usused peluso,s from everything Ive read maybe the best bang for the buck oktava 012 Joly mods, I already have two of these and like them a lot but thought I would probablyl like a little variety Is there anything else I should consider. I cant go over $1000 for 2 so that is probably going to limit me. |

Jeff, what kind/s of music and recordings are you doing? What other mics do you already have? And in what other applications could/might you use these mics?
Are you convinced you need a pair of mics? Are you convinced they need to be SDC's? : ) |

DOT IM NOT COVINCED OF ANYTHING
Ive been mostly recording country gospel and Im happy with what I have for that. Im doing a bluegrass session for a label. Im going to be recording first pass acoustic bass, mandolin and acoustic guitar then overdub the lead instruments and vocal. My complete mic locker is Oktava 219 with the Joly mod 2 oktava 012,s with the Joly mod and a set of hyper cariod heads along with the cardiods a mxl 77 modded by Dave Thomas with a 47 capsule a mxl 77 modded by Dave with the c 12 cap a stellar ribbon modded by M Joly 4 beyer drum mics, the ones that clip on 2 sm 57,s 1 sm7 a akg 112 so I was thinking bass a ribbon and the 47 mandolin the Oktava 012,s acoustic, ? this is actually a acoustic guitar solo album then I would have the option to use whatever I want on anything else since they will be done one at a time Ive tried the ribbon on fiddle and like that if I only use one mic, I also have used the 77 with the akg style cap with good luck dobro I used the sm7 with good results on it because of time restraints. Maybe I have something that will work better. Ive done a lot of bluegrass at the tv station I work at but usually one of the one mic deals. THis guy knows exactly how he wants to do this, rhy tracs with a click and the leads one at a time. Actually he is a great player and I want to get the best possable sound I can. My pres are a focusrite 428 with 4 chanels of sytek. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated like I said,IM NOT CONVINCED OF ANYTHING |

Try the ribbon on body & modded 12 & then 47 neck. If not that then you have tons of other options to try. I think you have more than enough mics to capture an acoustic guitar there. |

well you right on the solo pass, my problem is doing the first pass bass, acoustic rhy, and mandolin. I love the ribbon on acoustic but then what do I use on the bass akg 112? If I use the 012 on the guitar what do I use on the mandolin unless I just use on mic maybe I do have enough Im just trying to get the best combination

My go to-mic for mando is a modded oktava 319 (and a Beyer M160 ribbon.) You could also put the SM7 on it and blend in the mix. That would leave the 12's for acoustic guitar.
I just got a Peluso P28, (tube sdc) which I use on acoustic guitars. It seems to be bass-light, presency, but with no crispy high end like a ATM 450 sdc. If you want to thin out a guitar to fit in a mix, it works great. For a solo guitar, it might be a little too...metallic sounding? I'm assuming, on the acoustic bass, you're going to find the sweet spot? It varies, from one instrument to the next. The important thing is to find where the tone is clear and un-muddled by low overtones. I would think the D112 would be a bad choice. Because of the mid scoop, you'd be getting a lot of woof and a lot of fret noise, but you'd be missing the tone that gives the notes definition. If you're itching to spend money, you might consider the AEA TRP pre. It not only sounds great on ribbons and dynamics (makes a SM7 sound amazing) it cleans up a tube mic and lets you hear what it actually sounds like. I compared the AEA with my sytek clean channels on tube mics and the SM7, and the AEA won, hands down. Just curious, what does that 47 capsule sound like? Did you get a response curve with it? I have several DT modded mics, a C-12 Peluso cap, and another with the peluso 367(?) capsule. I'm thinking of trying the 47 capsule instead of the 367. ***** Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will wipe out an entire species. |

Talking with Dave, I would have thought that the CM12 would be great on acoustic. Dave's sold a pair of these to a guy that uses them more than his U67's now. Based on my limited experience with it, the CM47LE wasn't too shabby on acoustic either.
I'd try one or 2 MA KM69's if you can though-- but I'm partial to KM84's, so I'm a tad biased |

My goto on featured guitar is always MS pair. No sdc quite does it for me. Mind you
it they show up with a Takamine then put up a 58 and do a crossword. |

Check out the Chameleon Labs TS-1. Do a search on it on ProSoundWeb. It's the best mic I've found so far for acoustic guitar, although in full disclosure I haven't tried the high end SDC's.
I believe I found the thread: http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/mv/msg/18089/0/0/15661/ -Steve |

Hi Jeff,
Well, there are several things you can try. What I always do, and what I also recommend, is hire or loan them first and try several models. Then pick the one you likely will use more often. Now, in your case, and with regards to the existing collection, here are some suggestions to try: - Josephson e22s Elektrical audio edition (fairly clean but with a very nice mid, good for several sources and pretty versatile) - Microtech Gefell M295 Cardioid - Royer R122 active ribbon Of course you can also get a pair of large dia condensers or a cool stereo ribbon. The advantage of the active ribbon is that they give you the nice mids and silky highs of a ribbon, but with enough output and the impedance of a modern condenser. Also, the ribbons make excellent overhead, room and electric guitar mics. And if you have preamps with a lot of gain, give the Coles BBC 4038 a try. They are my all time favourite character mics and overhead mics. But they are classics, so they need careful handling and do not fare well with phantom power. A good compromise is the Royer SF-24 phantom powered stereo ribbon. Put this baby in front of horns, reed, OH or louder string instruments and you get sonic gold. Always, YMMV. These are mics I personally like and use. Cheers Arthur |

I gotta wonder: are you implying that Takamines are so easy to record that even a 58 will do the job, or that Takamines are such shit that you might as well not even try? I assumed (and agree with) the latter, but I figured I'd ask. |
