your sound card is probably not the problem. What kind of program are you using, sounds like you are just over driving the inputs your using on the program

You should be able to insert the cd into your pc's cd drive and rip the files to your hard drive with no change whatsoever in the sound quality.

To answer your question directly, get a used M-Audio Audiophile USB. Great for recording from RCA sources (CD players, Turntables, Cassette decks).

Yeah, the rip is the way to go.

BTW, you shouldn't be using your mic input anyway. Assuming you don't have a digital option, the analog out of the player would use a line in of the sound card.

maybe I misunderstood the question. It sounds to me like you have a project on a multi trac recoreder and your using your laptop as a mixdown machine. If that is the case you have to use a program say like sound forge to mix to. Or you can as they are suggesting transfer the files right onto you hard drive which is the best thing to do. THen you can open them up on a multi trac program and render a in the box mix.this way your never using you sound card. Do you have a multi trac program for you laptop. Something like sonar, cubase, there was one out not long ago for free wasnt there cant remember the name maybe reaper

You may be right, Jeff. I might have it wrong.

Chuck says he put together a CD on a multitrack so I was assuming he meant from a multitrack.

Chuck, you might want to be a little more specific and clear as to what you have to work with.

how are you playing it back what are you playing it back through

is the mic input the only input on your laptop, dont you have a line input. If your going into a mic input that is part of your problem. You friend has a totally different setup so that doesnt mean anything. See if you have a line input

sounds like you need a different sound card/interface or another mix down solution to make it happen. Any stand alone cd recorder should work, The Alesis Masterlink rocks for mix down. Can you export tracks via ethernet , firewire or usb from your multi-track? That may be another solution.
