OK, I'm tired of them, I need another set for my acoustic guitar. Something full sounding, but not boomy.

Suggestions?

If you want tostay coated try the Martin SP plus. Ileft elixer because they snapped to much. The martins lasted alot longer. Of course, I finger pick with the tips of my fingers so picks or nails might have different results.

I like regular old D'addario phosphor bronze 12's. You could try the 80/20s if you want something a little brighter.

Another vote for D'Addarrio EJ17 (or 16 as recommended above). They're consistent and good sounding, IMO.

Coated strings blow HARD. Not just tonally...their intonation goes as quickly as any string--but they still "feel" new, so you don't change them. As if guitar intonation wasn't sketchy enough as is...

I just bought case of old school Dean Markley Phosphor Bronze and have been very happy with them.

That's funny.

I've been trying lots of different strings over the past year or so. Previously I'd always used phosphor bronze.

A couple weeks ago I just went out and got a set of relatively inexpensive Phosphor Bronze strings.

That did it. There's something rich and sparkly in phosphor bronze that I can't get in other strings. So now I'm back to using them.

There are three different Elixir strings for acoustic guitar, Polyweb 80/20, Nanoweb 80/20 and Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze. Add the several different gauges avaialble for that brand and you end up with many possible combinations, all of which will sound different on a guitar.

There are numerous other brands, both coated and uncoated.

Like many things, string choice depends on the player, the instrument, the setting (e.g., solo vs. band) and personal preference.

My deal, again, is that I play with my finger tips. Add that to acidic hands and non-coated strings just go dead too quickly for me. I also like a bright snappy string so I always liked elixers. Of course, I never noticed any intonation issues becaused they snapped after a week or two.

sdelsolray,
I think we all already know that Wink

I have Nanoweb 80/20 on it now. Tired of both tone & playability.

I have D'Addarrios nickel wound in almost all my electrics, I dig them, but they don't last more than a session for me. It's very irritating & expensive changing them every time.

I have Dean Markley Blue Steel 10-46 in one of my LPs. I dig them a lot, very nice vibe, however it didn't give me enough balls recored. I was thinking going up a gauge.
Where do you guys buy Dean Markleys? Any good & fast online source?

Never tried Martins.

Have you tried the John Pierce? Very smooth response, pretty long lasting, etc...

What kind of acoustic are you putting them on, and what kind of music are you wanting to get out of it? These things really make a HUGE difference in string choice for me

I used to use John Pierce. Then I was told they are D'addario's in a different box, by the owner of a well respected music store here in the Boston area.

I still use D'Adarrio's.

I never liked Elixers for guitar. I do like then for mandolin though.

Hope not to shock too many folks, but Elixir does not make strings. They are D'Addario strings with Goretex applied to them, by Gore industries.

That may be true, but without a doubt they sure sound different. I wouldn't be surprised if the JP strings are made in the D'Addario factory. D'Addario is huge. I don't beleive that they are just rebranded though.

If you want something different from Elixir 80/20, try some Phosphor Bronze strings, either uncoated or coated (each has certain advantages and certain disadvantages relative to the other).
