I've got a little bit of cash so I'm finally going to be able to upgrade from my Aardvark pres. I'm looking at getting a couple of VTB-1's as I've heard the DMP3 is similiar to the pres in the Q10.
Whenever I've recorded vocals they always have a grainy and harsh sound in the high frequencies. At first I thought it was my mic, but after getting the Vienna it still had the same nasty quality in it. So that leaves me with either the preamps or the A/D converters.... And since I don't have money to upgrade the converters at the moment, I'm hoping a preamp upgrade will at least be a step toward harsh-free vocals. LOL Is the VTB-1 going to make any significant improvement over the Q10 or am I wasting my money? -tkr ______________________________ 'Cause I don't wanna read the book, I'll watch the movie. http://www.freewebs.com/tekker http://tekker.dmusic.com |

Hi Tekker,
i called my friend about the Aardvaark He is actually still using the version before the q10 and does not have any issues with harshness. He thinks it sounds pretty good and that the Q10 was an improvement...that said he uses an RNP and a great river as well as some other pres these days. I am curious as to how hard you are driving the pres and what your room is like etc.? Upgrading the pres would be nice but wondering whether the VTB 1 will make much of a difference. I have had some luck combatting harshness by cutting back on the preamp levels. I had always used tape and it has taken awhile to get use to not pushing the gain too high. YMMV, carl |
