Hi everyone!
We just did a recording session where we tried out a A-Designs Reddi Tube DI, Avalon U5, and a Millenia TD1 on bass for a song. Please check out the link below for more info. and to listen. http://corrientesmusic.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=211 Let me know what you think. evt Corrientes Website: http://www.corrientesmusic.com Corrientes Forum: http://corrientesmusic.com/phpBB2/ EVT's Studio Forums Journal: http://studioforums.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/4771010951/m/9561043542 |

For that particular guitar & performance I like REDDI.

Just listening on headphones (not studio) and am surprised how similar the U5 and Reddi sound.
I found that the TD1 had more sag in the sound, which sounded like compression, but I'm pretty sure that unit doesn't have a compressor.Out of curiosity, what mode was the TD1 in, VT or SS? I've found the same sort of effect with the STT-1 at times, where it can sound a bit compressed when no compression is being applied. |

Oops.. lol
During mixdown, I reamped each of the bass tracks through the Emperical Labs Distressor with the same settings for all three (6:1 turn attack on 5, release 4.). I then blended a little of the compressed track in with the original track. I found out and the TD1 was in VT mode. evt Corrientes Website: http://www.corrientesmusic.com Corrientes Forum: http://corrientesmusic.com/phpBB2/ EVT's Studio Forums Journal: http://studioforums.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/4771010951/m/9561043542 |

Can we listen to original files? First I thought that was the bass player, but now that you said this I'm thinking distressor settings might not be right. |

I just recently got it, so I just used the recommended settings from the manual for bass and blended it a little to the original track.

Gotcha. I find that when using the Millennia, I'm in VT mode 80% of the time. |

evt, you say you're reamping through the Distressor. Do you mean you're using a reamp device or your DI box in reverse, or are you just going out of your converters, into the Distressor, and then back into your recorder (what are you tracking/mixing to these days?)? The Distressor wants to see line level signal, so using a reamp or DI box isn't necessary.
Also, is there any particular reason you're parallel compressing and not just using the compressed signal? If you're not time aligning the two signals, you're probably getting phase problems. I would keep it simple and just use the compressed track. |

I go out of presonus firebox audio interface through a radial JDI and then out the xlr into the distressor and then I hit play and record back in to sonar 6 from the firebox.
I often just take off the original track when I'm doing this with drums and use just the compressed signal. But, when I listened back i though it sounded better with both tracks blended together. It just helped to even things out so certain softer parts didn't get lost in the mix and it kept the live feeling in it more. (i though so at least). I pretty much do things by ear. Thanks to everyone for checking it out. We decided to use the Reddi track. -ev Corrientes Website: http://www.corrientesmusic.com Corrientes Forum: http://corrientesmusic.com/phpBB2/ EVT's Studio Forums Journal: http://studioforums.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/4771010951/m/9561043542 |

OK, there is no need to use the JDI to go from the Firebox to the Distressor. Just go out one of the line outputs on the Firebox straight into the Distressor, and then back in through one of the line inputs. Keep it simple If the parallel compression works out for you, go for it. But do be careful to slide the process track back so it's in phase with the dry signal. I'd suggest you try one of the lower ratios (4:1 at the most, probably 2:1 or 3:1) and just use the processed track without the dry signal. |

Thanks for the help. I will try what you said in the future.
