I had to record a $3k Morgan acoustic recently that had it's doors blown off by a $250 Cort. I'm sure Mr Morgan makes some lovely guitars, that sound as lovely as they look, but I've yet to hear one out of the 3 that I've recorded. All 3 were bright, shrill, horrible sounding dud's.

Well that does surprise me a little bit about the Morgan. Then again the craftsmanship that makes it 3 grand be what makes bright and shrill.

It's the same concept (in my anti-Zildjian opinion) as to why Zildjian's upper class cymbals sound bright and shrill. They live off the tradition of sounding like class ad it comes out as glass.

Wink

As far as guitars go, either do I. I play LH so getting my hands on a fine vintage guitar is as hard as the purchase, so I get by with disposable guitars Smile - although I do have a 74' BC Rich Eagle and 78' Strat.

I screwed up the Eagle years ago by putting a stupid Kahler wiggle stick on it (it's been sitting in it's case for 6 years.) Going to restore it someday, but it will not be nearly as valuable now, as far as collectors would be concerned.

I think, some vintage things are totally over romanticised.
I often wonder, why people buy stuff only because its older than 25 years.
A friend called me and said, that he found a 27years old 2 Track cassette recorder and I only asked him If he got money to take this bullshit home.
But I also think, that there is a lot of vintage stuff that is still unreachable like old LA2A's or something.
My Sennheiser MD441U is now about 32 years old and sounds greater than ever.

cheers from germany Wink

Wiggle stick- I like it. I had a Strat with one of those Kahlers. What a POS, I yanked it out and put a block in the enormous hole that had been routed out and installed a stock Fender whammy. It plays much better now.

441s are great mics- very versatile. I'd love to have a couple of those but they're pretty pricey in the US- around $500-$600 new and $300-$400 used on ebay. The markup on Beyerdynamic is pretty steep over here too.

I was wrong- they've gone up in price since I last checked. New MD441's in the U.S. retail for $935 and sell for $650-$700. So, that's about the same price as in Germany. I guesss it's no bargain in either country.

A real pity! I've seen a great MD441 trading empire with Sennheisers from USA, and every engineer in europe is happy about his 441 and 421.
But now, this vision is gone and I just feel tired and old......

Cheers from germany,
