Great work Dot!

I found this graph really interesting and helpful.

Am looking forward to trying the Neuman U47 - and the AKG D12E (just out of curiosity)

I particulary like the dark/coloured ones so it's given me more ideas on what to look for.

Indeed! I am looking forward to any updates on this graph if any.

Also an analogous one dedicated to pre-amps would be super cool!

We'll add some more mics soon.

And there will be a graph for mic pres, too.

We have used an M9, dejecky, so I can't make any comments. But the CAD mics we have used have been fairly neutral.

The CAD M179 is on the graph.

How about the Rode NT2? I know that they're very bright, but I'm curious as to how bright they are compared to those other mics... Since I've never tried any of the others.

Thanks,
-tkr

The mic graph (and upcoming preamp graph) are very worthwhile projects, Dot. Thank you for all your time and effort.

May I suggest placing a "bullet" or some other demarcation at the exact point you mean to plot your mic on the graph? Until then, is the mic "plot" where the mic's name begins, or at the end of the mic name? Or in the middle?

Excellent Dot!

A very useful resource. I've been considering it greatly when contemplating future mic purchases. I've got 18 different mics to choose from and almost all of them are from the upper half of that graph. Time to do some balancing out.

Ok, Im going to walk into a room naked here, and "feel stupid". Between my boss and my woman , Im used to it I guess. (no, my boss doesnt see me naked, unless he has some freaky surveillance thing going on, but Im wandering in my point here)

Is the graph supposed to work in like a "circle of fifths" rotation type thing, for combination, or does it just stay put? I dont get the placements east west north south. Does that make sense? Sorry

Guitwizz, there's no movement on the graph. Mics are either brigher or darker [less bright], and either more colored or less colored [transparent].

Dan,

Are you just earing/hearing the mics and using completely subjective input for judging where mics go on the graph or are you using some additional technological aides like spectral analysis to help determine the brightness/darkness of a mic?

All the best,

How are you distinguishing between bright/dark and "color"? I've always been curious.

To me...if a mic is really bright, it IS really colored. No? Or are you judging "color" just on how it handles the midrange?

The V69 you keep referring to as "Dark" is pretty essy from the tracks I've heard and is said everywhere to have a very intimate constant "air" band...so how does a mic that has an airy constant get on the "dark" side of the chart?

Neat chart and all...but, I totally don't understand the subjective calls...and don't get me started on how different mics respond differently in brightness and midrange color at different SPLs...

I figure the center of the graph as a reference point. Thus the MD421 and Cad M179 are the reference to which the others are compared too.
Just a general guide biased through DOT's ears. Good ears, don't ya think?
