I wonder where it is made?
It looks like an interesting mid-level between Shiney Box and AEA. AKA mandocaster |

Nice, well - it LOOKS nice!
I don't know of too many mid-range ribbons? There's the infamous Nady ribbon for not much, and then AEA stuff further up the price list. Actually, now I think about it, I'm always hearing about Beyer ribbons which are relatively mid-range |

Suggested retail price seems similar to some of the Beyer ribbons. I'd love to have a pair.
I bought TapeOp (Pacific Pro Audio) and upgraded output transformers to Cinemag. Best under $300 I ever spent on 2 mics! |

Bruce, could you give some more info on the cinemag transformers?
Part #? Where did you buy them? Any mods to make them fit? Installation advice? Much appreciated! Madguitrst has left the Forums.......but not before committing acts designed to offend the senses. |

I guess the beyer M160 would also be a good mid-level ribbon... but it isn't really big and cool looking like the GT is.
AKA mandocaster |

I wonder if the GT ribbon mic will be any more tougher than the 'standard' ribbon mics? You know that some prick will drop it or blow on it!

-Part #9888 -Got it from Cinemag -Original xformers were bolted on but Cinemags have unthreaded mounting holes. I used very short sheet metal screws and screwed them in at slight angle because Cinemag holes are slightly different distance apart. Fum used a single self tapping screw [a very short one] screwed directly into one of the holes of his Shiny Box mods. His way is probably simpler and he says they are very secure. A couple of Fum comments on the mod: - The transformer mod is straightforward. two wires on primary, two wires on secondary. Desolder, mount new transformer, resolder. - stock / Cinemag: red / red white / brown green/ orange black / yellow with the white wire of the Cinemag going to ground. Hope this helps - spec sheet will likely not state this for the microphone, but the spec sheet from the transformer company will. On your mic, the red/white is primary, green/black is secondary. Or use a multimeter, across primary or secondary. One side will give you a very small resistance(like under an ohm), there's your primary. The other side higher, say 25-50 ohms or so. That's secondary. Regards ju _________________ Hope this helps, the mod is pretty easy. 'ju' is Jules, who is Fum the Shiny Box Guy. Bruce P. |

Great info!
I'm going to pick up an Apex ribbon and I may try this mod. Thanks for posting this Bruce. |

The Apex looks exactly like my TapeOp group buy mics. Hopefully the transformer wires are the same color as well. If not, the multimeter method works well - I tried it on mine.
The stock transformers don't have a ground wire like the Cinemags do but it's very easy to see where the ground wire attaches inside the mic. |

Saving my pennies for a Royer 121. Favorite mic for fender amps.

The R-121 is just the bees knees. Been trying it lately on some vocals and it's actually pretty good. Not as bright as a condenser, but nice. Flip around and record on the "back side" and it's like adding 10% of a consenser's brightness into the equation. Very cool mics for sure and well worth the $$.

Saving my pennies for home improvement projects.
Besides, if all my gear is high end and beautiful then I'd have to blame the players or the room! ...What? ....Blame myself? (....actually, I'd love to have a 121.) |

I don't have a collection of ribbon mics - my TapeOp mics are my only ones, so I cannot even pretend to be anywhere close to as knowledgable as many on this board. I'm a weenie! My mod [Cinemag] was done primarily out of ignorance... but I lucked out. I've had a growing interest in DIY projects and have been frequenting the TapeOp board [now down] and ProdigyPro. I've built a Hamptone JFET and Seventh Circle kit. I have parts for a Green Pre, which is also supposed to be really nice. Guys who know much more than me were saying that the Cinemags would open up the highs and tighten up the bass on these mics so I ordered transformers before the mics even arrived. Some have said that these mics are good 'as are' if you already have other ribbons because they offer another 'color' on your pallette. Anyway, I recorded a Martin guitar duet today with a pre Civil War parlor size Martin and a 1944 OO Martin [punchy!] through my [self modified] TapeOp mics and my [self built] Hamptone JFET and felt very pleased. You need to e-mail Cinemag for a price quote. I paid $43 each for my transformers. Visit ProdigyPro.com and do a search on the Shiny Box. There are a lot of DIY'ers over there who build almost everything for themselves! Not hacks but very, very smart audio people. |

I have a couple of acoustic guitar tunes recorded with Chinese ribbons/Cinemag upgrade posted on my soundclick pageif anyone is interested in hearing the mics.
They are recorded in the choir room (fairly dead acoustics)at the church where I work. The players aren't pros but aren't bad either - they enjoy themselves. Pete (80+ years old) breathes through a fixture implanted in his throat by means of oxygen tank and a pump so you can hear this some. He's really a decent player and plays a 1944 Martin 00 of which he is the original owner. It's the fatter sounding guitar. Gary is interim associate pastor and an avid Martin guitar afficianado and collector. His parlor size guitar was built in the early 1840s and restored by a luthier who used to work for Santa Cruz and who's name I don't remember. It's the brighter sounding guitar. He wanted to do a take of a little solo piece he's been working on so I posted it as well. TapeOp mics/Cinemag tranformers > Hamptone JFET > Lynx 2 > Samplitude 8 Pro. Sonalksis stereo comrpessor w slightly under 2 ratio and a tad of R66 reverb. Duet is with mics about 18 inches away. Solo is with mics about 2 feet away.
