I just used it instead of a Korby 47 (depressing). It was just clearly better for this singer (less mids, more Highs and still not sibilant or brittle).
Just goes to show...you need OPTIONS. jmp |

Had one with mullard tube in it, much better than stock. Very good mic, I agree.

nbarts - What kind of tube (model number?)
How would you describe the sound difference? |
|||
|
|
Godan |
Smoother highs & hi-mids & lower self noise is how I'd describe it, may be a little more air on top.

The one I am using is borrowed but I will probably get one myself and would change out the Tube.

Thanks, nbarts. Do you have a tube store you recommend, or should I just search the internet?

I gotta try the tube swap. My MXL V69 and V67 are the best cheap chines LDCs I have ever used.

The mic is in the police station right now, I don't know how long it's gonna take them to get it back to me, but I think it is a newer one.

Actually, that's how I would describe it. |

Now you can ask all questions to James, he knows better anyway. |

I just ordered a Mullard from tubedepot.com. I'll compare it with the stock tube when it comes in and let you guys know what I think.

Be sure to take your time when swapping tubes. There's a red rubber grommet at the base of the tube socket (see picture above) that is a PITA to get off and back on.
You'll need to wiggle things back/forth. BTW, I bought my Mullard from TubeDepot as well. |

I'm gonna try a Mullard in Peluso 22 251 too, I really hope it will make things better.

I can't figure out how to get the old tube out. I moved the red grommet down. Do I take the whole thing apart?

I finally got it in, but it took some work.
When I got the tube from tubedepot.com the words "Mullard" or "Made In Great Britain" were no where to be found on the tube, so I gave them a call. He assured me it was a mullard. OK whatever. I don't know crap about tubes. I did a quick recording of some spoken words and some bad singing with the old tube before I replaced it. I did the same with the new tube. It was a very unscientific test, but the Mullard sounded a little more "clear" overall and less "boomy" in the lower mids. It just sounded like it needed less EQ to sound like a vocal recording, if that makes any sense. |

Did you warm up the mic before using? Looks like not really.
|
|||
|
|
6th kyu |
No, I didn't really warm it up. It was on maybe 10 mins. before I tried it. I was just in a hurry. I had to be somewhere. The guy at tubedepot also said about 10 hours of burn-in time for the tube.

I just realized that in the past year I have bought from John Mark Painter, and sold to nbarts.
