Okie dokie. I have a Sovtek 12AX7-WA made for Fender that I bought as a spare for the Blues Jr amp I used to own. Should I bother trying this thing in one of my V69M's or just wait and order something better? I'll have to try it for myself, of course, but it's fun to get opinions. I'm hoping to get some good ones as a reward for saying "okie dokie."

That is a good tube.
I think it will be too high gain and would likely have smeared detail because of that.

And looking back over this thread, I see John and James Allen mentioning a 12AY7 or a 6072.

Yes, the 12AY7/6072 have less gain than a 12AT7 and they seem to give a clearer tone.

I spoke to John Peluso a few times and I THINK he told me that he had originally designed the Mic for a 12AY7.

6072a is what I'd try.

I bought my v69's way back in November, and I just got around to seriously comparing one of them to my other microphones as a vocal mic. I liked the character it gave my voice, so I called around. The best tube option I could find close by was an RCA 12AY7 for $35. I also picked up a Groove Tubes Gold Series 12AT7. I put the RCA in one of them and immediately tested it to make sure I didn't screw something up. I was wowed. It's great to hear a piece of gear open up like that...and I didn't even give it a chance to warm up yet.

I put a GT 12A77 in my SP TB-1, and it made a huge difference. I really like that mic BTW.

After all the talk about the V69 I think I might just have to pick one up. . . I'd pretty much made up my mind to save up $200 extra and go with an M-Audio Sputnik, but now I'm second guessing that choice.

Has anyone tried the other MXL tube mics--like the 960 or 9000? I've read very good reviews on these as well.

Cheers,

k
