My first real pre/eq was a Trident Signature One. Then I got a UA 6176, sold it and got a UA 2-610(Love it but miss the 1176). Then I got a True Systems Precision 8. That pre my friend is LOUD and BIG! It, in my opinion, is the most colorless mic pre. It finally let me hear the color of all of my microphones. I just bought an API 500 10-space rack and am filling it up with 512C's, A-Audio and Puple. My jouney will end with the acquisition of four Neve 1073's.

Very cool, Bob and welcome..That's a helluva a pre rack you're assembling. One comment I'd add re your journey for (4) 1073's, is that the challenge to find 4 of them, consistant with each other will be a task to be sure. Have you thought of looking at some of the cool clones? e.g. I've had my first taste of the Chandler LTD1 over the last few days, and found it to be just wonderful. Anyways, good luck! You'll be sittin pretty either way |

Great article Dan! This puts things in perspective.
There are many 'low-end' gear that have a 'mid-level' sound and a few that are close to 'high-end'. Its good to research and use your ears and not get caught up with alot of hype. |

Good point. I was just telling a friend today, that after over 20hrs of pre-prod for drums, for an upcoming CD, we found that the stock Sony DMX-100R pre beat out the Great River on the bottom snare mic. It was a clear winner in this app *shrug*

This question is about a live PA application and not in the Studio but still is somewhat on topic... The details are... As mostly a solo performing songwriter, vocal and acoustic guitar for my live PA system I use a Mackie 1402 VLZ with Mackie 450 speakers. I have I have a TC M ONE. The Mackie pres seem some what bright to brittle. I would like to add a better PRE and compressor to my PA. I just replaced my Focusrite ISA 220, with a A designs MP2A for studio use., So I am thinking I could use the 220 in the PA with a single mic for voice and guitar Bluegrass style but I am am also considering, sell the 220 and get 2 channels. What ever I do I would like to have the two channels be equal or better than the 1 channel with the Focusrite. I am interested in thoughts on either a Toft ATC2 combo unit. or some other 2 channels of mic pre and 2 channels of compression Like RNP And RNC or A Designs Pacifica and RNC or ??? Thoughts or suggestions Thanks Kevin

Hi
Anyone of you guys tried TL Audio Ebony A2? I can't find any online reviews of this piece. What makes me skeptic is the fact that the price of the Ebony mono channel strip is so close (100 euro of a difference) to the price of A2 which is stereo pre/compressor... Should I take a closer look or better stay away? cheers, dyak |

Let your own ears decide on the Ebony stuff...remember, with VERY few exceptions, you do in fact get what you pay for...
FMR and the Rane MS1b are the only products I am aware of that are really stupid low cost/stupid high performers.... If Its Not A Good Idea, Then Why Am I Risking A Career With It? |
