Problem with 800s is to get em really sweet you have to crank them so loud they're useless.

That is a volume that does not exist. No such thing as too loud!

There are a lot of great amps out there if you don't dig the 800. VHT Deliverance D60 is a great example & can be had for less than a grand used. Try one if you haven't yet.

If you want power tubes that have more headroom and will break up later (will be a bit louder too), consider a pair of KT66. The amp will sound bigger and a bit harder.

I'm not sure what you mean by harder but that might be what I like. I play alot of John Lee Hooker type of guitar and I like like that snappy bite in my sound. So if that's what you mean by "harder" then I'm down with that. Anybody know of any good "tech aimed at musicians" type books out there that you could recommend?

One thing not mentioned here (or maybe I missed it) is the speaker ohm rating. If the speaker is new but wasn't replaced with the right ohm rating it will break up too early.
Reb Beach (Winger) used to do it for his Kitty Hawk amps in the eighties. He replaced the 16 ohm celestions with 8 ohm versions and the power section gets loaded down for more crunch (and more "sag".
I wasn't there, but one of my buddies told me about the trick. Thing is, there's always a cost when you try to defy the laws of physics and in that case, it's power tube life. They don't last a third as long as they would normally.
BTW, do not try that with a solid state amp of any kind. It'll make the "magic smoke" come out.

Maybe someone tried that with yours.

Careful with this...underloading a tube amp can cause it to overheat and make the magic smoke come out of it (and, AFAIK, is really hard on the output tranny)...generally not a good thing...

That's what I was going to say. Nevermind the tubes, it stresses out the tranny way too much.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I wasn't advocating under loading. I was just saying that it might be a problem with LanceP's amp.

I have never done it myself and I certainly don't recommend it. I thought the crack about Reb Beach's tone during the Winger days would be the clue.

I.combs, glad you caught the magic smoke reference. I always thought that would be a great band name.

Magic Smoke. Tonight only at 328 Performance Hall.

OK, Mr. Muffin, you want the Marshall crunch without being that much loud? I have the right amp for you, Naylor Super Club. You will find it hard to believe, but it works!

I love this thing, P2P handwired US made little single channel beast.

HA! You know the business, my friend!

I was originally planning to get the marshall mod from racksystems, which is the same super club preamp with JMP's power amp section, but after some research found out that it is too loud. Came across with a guy on TGP who had both 60 & 38 wt versions, so he sold me his 38wt-er for a reasonable price. To save all the BS of how good it sounds, it comes closest to modded plexi. Back the gain for some old style marshall crunch or add for some super nice distortion. No super loudness necessary.

Well, I too a look at that, it's an eight ohm speaker. But I don't know what it's supposed to have. Now, if it needs a sixteen and I put one in is that going to give the same volume, just cleaner?
