Robbie, Holy friggin' crap!!!

Anyhoo, I ran into a thread like this on another forum and thought to take a look see if we had one here ... and we do. So, here's my list, best as I can remember. It's short and pretty much undistinguished, so I'm adding close encounters as well as actual contact:

David Torn – Frequently hung out at Ithaca Guitar Works in upstate New York in the early 80’s. He’d sit around, making weird noises on Strats and a few of us noobs would be amazed. Chatted with him several times. Very nice, quiet guy.

Ed Kranepool (NY Mets) – Had my pic taken with him on the field at Shea Stadium, 1971. BIG guy, very nice.

Jerry Koosman (NY Mets) – Dugout, Shea Stadium, 1971. After the photo op with Ed K, we were sitting in the dugout before the game. Jerry stomped up and flung his glove on the bench while uttering an expletive … then saw us and said, “Hey, guys! How’s it going?” Very cool, chatted with us for a few minutes.

Greg Ginn (Black Flag) – Recorded him on bass with Perfect Rat at his studio space in Long Beach, CA, 2007. Very nice guy.

Don Imus – Book signing, Huntington, LI, 1996. Grumpy, as expected. It was near the end of a long signing session, and I figured I’d be cute, so as Don signed my book I said, “So, have you had enough of this crap yet?” He looked up and grunted and nodded. Funny note – I had him sign the book to Beanie & Mud (my wife and I), and he made a huge set of boobs out of the “B” complete with popping nips.

Susan St. James – Sitting in a hippy circle in a tent, Oregon Country Fair, 1980. She was decked out in full hippy garb. Stunningly beautiful in person, very sweet.

Chris Barron (Spin Doctors) – Jammed with us in the Village, 1992. Kind of a dickhead, unfortunately.

Anthony Michael Hall – Café Wa, NYC, 1993. With entourage … very full of himself. I said, “Love your work.” He said, “Thanks.”

Mick Jagger & Jeri Hall with kids – JFK Airport, NYC, 1979. Mick stumbled through to the Barbados counter with Jeri and the kids in tow. We were waiting to fly to the Bahamas for Spring Break. I had my acoustic, and started playing Honky Tonk Woman. Mick took note and gave me a wink. My girlfriend ran up and had him sign a book she was reading. When she handed it to him he said, “Wow, heavy!” He was soon mobbed by a crowd of girls (most from my group) and was swiftly led away by airport attendants.

Warren Haynes – Backstage at Gov’t Mule tour, Anaheim, 2007. My buddy was managing this tour. Warren was very humble and personable. Met the whole band and crew – great bunch.

Maynard Ferguson – Played my horn backstage at IMAC Theater, Huntington, NY, 1990. Great guy! Said he liked my horn (a drum corps soprano bugle). He ran out into his tour bus and came out with an 8x10 glossy & signed it for me.

The Roches – Backstage at IMAC Theater, 1992. Wonderful ladies!

Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn – Strolled by on the way to a restaurant, The River, Rancho Mirage, CA, 2007. We were doing an outdoor trio thing in the amphitheater there. K & G stopped and watched us for a few minutes, then went to dinner at Flemings. If we weren’t in the middle of a set, I’d have said hello. Darn. That’s the fun thing about Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, though – crawling with celebs all the time.

Met allan holdsworth, at the double door Inn, charlotte NC..... he signed autograhps, and after almost everyone else split, he went to the bar to have a pint....and sat next to me at the bar, and had a beer, so i introduced myself, and shook his hand, and cracked some jokes, and we never even talked about music.
he has giant hands.

met Buddy Guy, in his own club in chicago-- Legends....
i showed up around dinner time, long before the live acts started... and there he was, at the bar, having a beer.
i asked 'can i join you', and he said of course, yes, so we talked about the cubs game that was showing on the monitor....
really nice guy.

I met one of my heros, Kenny Aronoff at one of his clinics and shook his hand.

When I was in a country band doing festivals in the 90's I met people like Junior Brown, Blue Rodeo, Prairie Oyster, Paul Brandt, etc.

Did shows, but didn't get to talk to- Dolly Parton, Dwight Yoakum, Vince Gill, Alabama, Marty Stuart, Waylon Jennings, etc.

Since then, playing mostly blues music, I have jammed with members of Powder Blues when they came to our gig in Winnipeg after their gig, and hung with them after the show.

Our blues band did a blues fest in the late 90's and I had to play with the headliner, AC Reed and the Spark Plugs also, because their drummer couldn't make it across the border from Detroit. I had to do it cold. That was nerve wracking, but a hoot none the less.

Our band did a show as Louisiana Red's band a few years ago. We did that one cold, too.

In 2006, I met Loverboy on a gig my old band from the 80's were opening for them, and had a good talk with Matt Frenette. Really nice guy.

Last summer we opened for Colin James and spoke with him after the show.

My buddy JP is friends with, and I have met Gordie Johnson and Kelly Hoppe from Big Sugar.
Kelly played on our last album.

I am friends with, and have done gigs with Big Dave Mclean, Brent Parkin and Gord Kidder who are legends in Winnipeg, and should be, if they are not, all across Canada.

3. Travis Tritt-didn't get to meet him, his pedal steel player was kind.

Yeah - I've had as many "eh, whatever" chances to meet "famous people" that I've passed on, getting tired of sticking around for a Santana meet-n-greet and going for a beer instead was pretty typical. That, and more of mine are along the lines of Coolio, Method Man and Redman, Salt n' Pepa, Marilyn Manson, KMFDM, Tony Iommi, Tony Levin, Matt Chamberlain, and the like that belie my relative youth. ;-) Working in music retail and for manufacturers, you end up meeting folks - most of mine are 'sold that guy a synthesizer or some drum sticks' stories - the good ones are 'just folks'.

I was very fortunate to have met most of my heros and other celebs when I was touring in the 70s and early 80s. But today, the 2 people I'd love to meet would be Shatner and Jack Nicholson. Shatner's character in Boston Legal (Denny Crane) is so totally over the top that I literally almost get sick from laughing so damn hard! Applaud

Shatner is the man.
I worked on a record with him and got to play on a couple of tv shows with him.

One of the more surreal moments was walking into the dressing room to find Henry Rollins and Shatner watching my baby while my wife was getting ready.

I've met many people in the movie and music biz who are quasi famous, but for sheer starpower, this is my favorite anecdote:

In the mid eighties I was living in Los Angeles and attempting to become a rock star. I was window shopping on Melrose one day and kept noticing this tall, reddish-blonde, beautiful woman with a dwarfish man following along.

I went into a thrift store and was thumbing threw some shirts. I looked up and the same beautiful woman was on the other side of the rack with the same little man. I looked up again and registered that the man was Tom Cruise and the woman was Nicole Kidman.

Like I had a chance...

One thing about Nashville is you can't spit without hitting somebody of notoriety in either country or bluegrass music. I've gotten to spend time or meet just about everybody I ever wanted to as far as bluegrass musicians go. Bill Monroe and Jimmy Martin are probably the most colorful.

I got to watch a Hee Haw taping. I shook hands with Grandpa Jones, Minnie Pearl, Goober, and met some Hee Haw honeys whilst their hair was all up in curlers and no make up.

I drew Wayne Rogers (Trapper John) at a political fund raiser.

I drew caricatures at John (Martina's husband) McBride's birthday party. Martina personally gave us a cash tip. I'll never spend it. (Just kidding.)
