what plugs are compatible and what is not? I have a slew of DX plugs can they be used with an RTAS based program?

Not an expert on this myself, but I believe the answer is "it depends on the program." If the RTAS program provides a "wrapper" for the DX plugs, then yer in. Think of a wrapper as a kind of software adapter - kinda like, say, a quarter inch to RCA adapter. It allows a program to use plugins it wasn't originally designed to use.

yeah, it depends on what you're using and if it supports DX plug-ins...not all do. But if yours does not, then you may be able to find a third party program that can work around the limitation.
