I am going to get a new computer for a lynx 2b and a couple uad cards. I'm also going to pick up a pair of adam a7's for monitors. My question is, where am i going to plug the headphones to track vocals? Do I need to pick up a mixer, or maybe a big knob? If I do need a mixer, which one would you suggest that won't color the sound coming outta the lynx. My other option is to get a multi face, but since the lynx has the same converters as the aurora, I would really like to get this card.
The Mackie big knob is known for coloring the sound, as are most cheap solutions ($300 or less) that I've heard about. I would only use the Mackie (or something even cheaper, say a cheap headphone amp) if I had two outs from my soundcard (I don't know the Lynx), and thus wouldn't screw up the signal to my main monitors. Sounds like you need a unit that does both: allows you to monitor through headphones and send the signal to your Adams, right?
You might consider a Presonus Central Station (around $500) or if you want to get really good sound, go for something like a Benchmark DAC ($900 or so?).
Just a couple of ideas.
I have the Presonus and it is quite versatile. Also, I have heard a couple of trusted sources say that the Presonus has pretty good sound translation (versus the Mackie, say), even comparable, though not as good as, the Benchmark (the presonus has D/A converters and it has passive circuitry, which is supposed to more transparent).

i've considered the presonus, but the lynx 2 has the same convertors as the aurora, and it's arguably supposed to be the best sounding card out there. I am going to get a headphone amp for the second set of outputs. I do understand that the presonus is a great sounding stable system. The last thing i've recorded on was a session 8, and anything has to sound better than that.
You don't have to use the converters in the presonus. Just use it to route your signal to your main monitors and your headphones. It works quite well for that.
But a headphone amp is all your really need.
