I've got both. I'm familiar with PT but I'm kind of itching to move to something a little less proprietary and more artsy.
I'm not crazy about the track limit it PTLE. Also not happy that there's no ADC. Just feels kind of stiff to me in general as well. Logic feels like an apple product (which is a good thing for me at least). A little more artsy. Seems to be more writing-music-ideas friendly. More based on software instruments and such that get my juices flowing. I don't like that PT won't let me open a session without pluging in my digidesign box. Also don't like real-time bouncing (I think that's different with Logic 8?). I've got an 002 rack and ADI-8 converter right now and could probably just keep using it with Logic I guess. When we do our full albums we have a guy in LA (well, Japan now) mix and then he sends it to Nashville to be mastered. He uses PT (HD) so I'm a little concerned about that with Logic. But I don't know that it should make much of a difference since we're just tracking the audio and sending it off. Any thoughts? Like I said, I've got both right now. I'm more familiar with PT but I'm sure I could learn Logic. The goal of switching would be a more fluid and creative writing experience with a secondary goal of a more fluid and creative tracking experience. Third goal of having a nice rig to mix demos on. Thoughts? sincerely, nathan peterson |

I'm in a similar situation.
I have an 002R and a fireface. If i switch to logic or cubase I can ditch the 002R! But i have tried and i find the meter level scaling more sensible in PT than logic and also i think the included compressor plugins are better in PT. does your 002R synch correctly to your ADI-8 over lightpipe? my 002R will synch to the fireface over spdif but over adat it makes lots of crackles and pops, major clocking issues, although it doesn't actually give me an error message. If I make the 002R master then it works but why should sync my good converters to the 002? to me logic feels a bit like a toy, and PT a bit more serious on the software front, but thats just a first impression. If PT would work directly with my fireface i wouldnt be thinking of switching, its digi's insistence on their own crappy hardware thats bugging me. |

i use a bnc cable to sync the clocks. works perfectly. recorded an album with it late last year (www.helloindustry.com).
it seems like sound-wise the only difference is going to come from converters and summing. i use external converters with the 002 so that'll be the same either way. and i have someone else mixing our large projects so summing isn't an issue either. so i'm wondering if there's really anything that can event affect the sound between the 2 programs in my case. if there's not, then i have to decide based on 2 things (AFAIK): 1. do i want to learn a new program? i know pt very well. BUT i use garage band for all of my writing ideas and love it - which is why i like the idea of logic 8 (similar interface). 2. will i have trouble interfacing with the pro world (PT HD) for our larger projects? i just sent an email to the guy who we had mix our last album to see if it would be a pain for him if we tracked in Logic 8. Aside from all of that, the forums I've been reading lately are saying that Logic 8 is just a step below or even as good as PT HD and that both Logic 8 and PT HD are way better than PT LE. I don't know what they're basing that on though. But I'm comparing Logic 8 and PT LE, so if that was true then my choice would be clear. sincerely, nathan peterson |

how can you use a BNC cable to sync clocks on the 002R? it doesn't have a BNC connector!

oh my. very sorry. we've got a yamaha digital console we use live and i mixed it up with that.
you're right. no bnc connectors. that's weird then. i had no problem with clock sync'ing between my 002 and my adi-8. did you go into the preferences in PT and set it to use the adi as the clock source and to make the 002 a slave to it? i got clicks and pops until i did that. i'm not in front of it now so i can't remember the exact menu option - i think it's the same place you set your buffer settings. ? sincerely, nathan peterson |

I use Logic 8--7.2 nearly drove me insane, but 8 is pretty happening. I think it's become more PT-like in terms of user interface--that is to say simpler, though some complain it was made dumber. The included plugs (and I'm including the sampler and the additional assortment of instruments) are largely good to great, with some wonderful stuff thrown in. The midi is slick and easy to use, if that's ever going to be a consideration.
There should be no problem exchanging files with PT setups from Logic. I haven't done it myself yet. |

The guy I use to mix said it'd be no problem to switch from my Logic 8 tracking to his PT HD mixing.
I'm going to keep both around for a bit. We don't have another project coming up for another year or so, so I've got time to mess with them side by side. If I do go with Logic I may look at ditching the digi002 for something simpler. I already have an 8-chan converter (RME ADI-8) and have 2 channels of Phoenix pres and 4 channels of Sabletron on the list of stuff to purchase for the next album. Just need to get the audio into Logic. sincerely, nathan peterson |
