Let us know what you need! That's exciting. I'm jealous. You have 50 gig more than me!!

You might want to review what I wrote in that long winded post on page 1. Might want to invest in a firewire drive and clone to there. Or of course you an clone (mirror) to the 300 gig 2nd drive. I'd partition it though. Use Disk Utility found in the Utilities folder under Applications. I use the disk utility so much I just put it's icon in the dock. You know what the dock is, right? All those little icons down at the bottom (or the side, where ever you've put the as your preferences). They serve as quick launch pads for you applications.

Be sure you know what all these terms mean. Check out the manual thoroughly. I dont know how much you know and how much you don't. I don't talk over or under your head.

Thanks Henry,
I'm actually a little frustrated with what I don't know about Macs.... This is actually the first Mac I've ever touched. It's a little different than the PC World. Thanks for your assistance! I do want to create a Mirror installation. Not 100% sure how to proceed. How do I Zero Format this new Drive?
Arthur suggested:

So I suggest this:
To start off, go with two internal drives. Partition one of em for two identical system installations, i.e. one original and one mirror. This is useful if shit happens, just put the mirror back and you are up and running again in minutes. THis alone saved my butt in many recording sessions, because shit will happen, it is just a matter of time.

Don't partition your data drive. There is no need for it, and you will slow down read and seek times.

The main thing is to provide ample of RAM. My system has 8 GB RAM and it is lightning fast.

It seems to make sense not to Partition the Data Drive (My Drive 2).? Better read and seek times...? If I were to Partition the Drive 1 that came with the unit I would loose all that is currently loaded, right, same as a PC ?
I should be able to load it all back in with the disks that were supplied, ? If I partioned it into 2 logical drives what the best procedure to duplicate it in the other logical drive on HD1 ? Reload from the disks again?
I am also having a problem with Digital Performer. I loaded it and everything went fine, but it isn't opening up when I click on the icon...probably something I did wrong!
How do you uninstall on this machine? Man, I have alot to learn.......

I thought you were a little in over your head here. It's easy. Give me a minute. I got a lot of stuff to do and my wife is watching me like a hawk. I've spent too much time on the computer not making money . . .

Partitioning is done with th aforementioned disk utility. You have to reformat, which means erase everything.

Get SuperDuper from Shirt Pocket .

You can use it for free unles you want to schedule incremental back ups. The full version is only $27.. That will clone your drive safely. All the stuff installed n your computer should be the stuff that's on your install disks, so for now you have nothing to worry about., But it'll save your set up. admin, email info so you dont have to do that song and dance all over again.

Re the not partitioning your data drive, I don't know. I've partitioned mine into two parts. A large section for the OS/apps and another for soundfiles. Then my second 250 gig internal drive is partitioned three ways. I've never had a problem with read/write speed, but then again what I know/don't know won't hurt me.

More later . . .

All the best,

Henry Robinett

I am wondering why you guys are partitioning your hard drives? Partitioning will do 2 things for you it will separate a batch of files which you could do by creating a data folder and it will make the defragmention process go more quickly which a good defrag tool would also do.

You will possibly slow down your computer and increase the maintenance and boot failure risk in the process.

Your performance and organizational gains are going to come from installing multiple drives. Putting your data (projects, songs, etc.) on it's own drive will give you a performance gain as well as make back ups a breeze.

A couple of reasons - habit. But mainly I like having seperate partitions where I can reformat the drive quickly and easily. For instance I have 2 audio partitions. I record to one. Then for my next project I copy the files over to the second and reformat the first. So my sectors are always cleaned. Music files real destroy drives. I don't defrag other than in this manner. I also have a seperate partition with a smaller OS for emergencies.

I've done this since OS9 days. Although many have told me it's no longer necessary and I certainly don't do it to the extent I used to, I've found evidence that supports my procedure as well.

For me it makes back up a real breeze this way. Everything is organized into it's sues. I back up the entire "drive" rather than sections or folders.

YMMV.

Nothing wrong with a purpose in the hands of someone that knows what to do with it Henry.

Thanks...
