I have a student who just picked up a copy of Amplitube and is loving the sound. He's not using it as a plugin, just as the standalone application.

The problem, of course, is the latency. He's running a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz with 256 MB of RAM. This sounded like enough juice to me... I'm thinking the soundcard/interface is his problem. Am I correct about this?

Any advice on a cheap USB interface that he could get that would solve his problems?

Thanks gents.

Yes the soundcard buffer not being low enough is the problem. There a ton of good USB preamp/interfaces out now. I would go to www.zzounds.com or somewhere like that and bring up the list by price.

I ran Amp1 on a P4 2.6 with no more latency than a POD (in stand alone mode)...it's his interface.

Cool, glad I wasn't off base. Anyone have any specific interface/pres that they've used and would recommend for this type of thing? He's just screwing around right now, maybe some light recording in the future.

GuitarPort. USB DI. $79 last I looked. Comes with the Line6 modelling software that I swear to you sounds better than the POD, IMO. Has ASIO drivers.

Downside...it's outputs are unbalanced RCA--to hook to consumer level speakers/amp. But, if that fits the scenario...
