I currently have a 001 running os9. I will soon be upgrading my converters (something like the Rosetta 200) and mic pres (high end 2 channel). I want to use my home studio as a satellite studio so I can work with a pro studio for some tracking, mixing, mastering, etc.
If I keep the 001 and run everything through it I increase latency and am limited to 48khz. However, I'd most likely work with a producer who is more familiar with PT and would make compatibility with a studio easier. If I go with another platform (probably DP) I can record higher sample rates, latency wouldn't be an issue as the Rossetta can plug directly via firewire, I could move to osX and leave os9 behind, and it would be just a slightly simpler more streamlined set up. But then I'm shelling out $400 bucks for new software, new learning curve for both me and a producer, and it doesn't have the ease of compatibility with a protools based studio. The thing about the 001 is it will be completely obsolete eventually. It pretty much is now, but atleast it's still compatible with other PT systems. So a software upgrade of $400 is still nicer on the wallet than upgrading to a 002R or something that would still have the latency issues and will eventually be obsolete too. Basically, it'd be nice to only have to do software upgrades rather than (digi) hardware up grades as well. Nice converters and pres will last forever. So is it worth staying w/PT for the compatibility and familiarity issues as well as not having to put extra money into the software aspect of the set up right now? Thanks! jmisner |

I'm not a "me too" guy or a PT guy. But I'm used to swimming up stream. Doesn't bother me. I use DP4.52 and don't look back. When I have PT clients I just load the files into DP without the PT proprietary crap. No crossfades, automation etc.. But so what? Every now and again I'm running upwards of 25-30 tracks and my little computer huffs and puffs. Time for a computer upgrade.
So you know what I'd do. All the best, Henry Robinett |
