I have no troubles with my PC with SP2 now and I certainly don't need to have a "new" windows program screw things up. So I'm checking if anyone is using this new service pack and if it has had any adverse effects on their recording software or PC in general.

Thanks

Don't upgrade to SP3. I did it after MS Updates kept nagging me for weeks on end.

I'm seriously fed up with MS. I'm having major clipping problems with my EMU 0404 (USB) after upgrading. It occurs when the processor shoots to 100% use. That accounts for the clipping, it's just that I never experienced frequent 100% CPU usage with SP2.

Right now I'm listening to Dave Grisman with Stefane Grapelli, and just hitting "reply" to your post caused a sonic disaster. Really pisses me off.

Luckily my recording system hasn't been (and will not be) updated after install. It uses XP SP2 with an EMU 1820M and doesn't have a network/internet connection.

I use the machine with the 0404 mainly to play music in my living room and sometimes to play a bit, when I don't feel like going off to the attic - where my home studio is.

When these PC's have reached EOL, I'm going for Apple.

BTW, if anyone reading this post has any suggestions for fixing my problem (apart form rolling back, that doesn't work), I'd be more than happy to hear it.

Cheers,
Gerald

If your DAW is stable and you're not on the net all the time, DON'T BOTHER...I've been bitten seriously by this...

I keep my NIC disabled, but if I need a quick download or something, I'll enable, then disable again...no concerns there...

After severe troubleshooting it turns out that my harddisk (at least my system partition) has an awful lot of bad sectors. After defragmentation I lost half a GB of storage, but at least all files are allocated to good clusters. I suspect that part of the registry was stored on clusters that were starting to experience I/O problems.

Anyway, I'm now faced with the decision of either buying a new harddisk and reconfiguring the whole system or buying a Mac Mini. I guess I'll wait to see what my bonus will turn out to be ;-)

Interrupting the dawg would piss me off, too. Smile

Made the mistake of updating. Well actually my SP2 with the 1820M has never been bulletproof. Figure it's the pc though, P4. I agree with the Mac sentiment. I'll just move Cubase to the Mac.

I have SP3 on several computers (3 at home, 7 at work) - no problems on any of them.

Gonzo is right......HDs are dirt cheap.

The thing is, I have seen a HD with bad sectors last for a long time (my first notebook) and I have seen a HD fail instantly and be cooked (seared the platters, even a recovery house with a clean room couldn't recover anything).

The moral of the story is don't wait - get a HD. if you get a mac too, great!. But no reason not to get a 500 gb HD for less than you might spend on coffee in a month.

Well I ordered a Mac Mini, due to arrive soon. I repaired the bad sectors but my PC is still a good deal slower than it used to be. I'm not usually one who believes in conspiracy theories, but if someone told me that MS and Intel/AMD made a deal to generally slow down XP a tiny bit with SP3 (which would primarily affect older PC's) to boost PC sales for the holiday season, I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyway, I'm pretty much tired of MS. Vista is complete and utter crap. With MS you still have to be half a computer nerd to know exactly what you're doing.
