Wanting to downsize remote rig #2...don't trust laptops...shuttle sized PCs have piqued my interest, but I'm concerned about FW IO (will use either FF800 or Firepod, depending on gig) and swappable drives...no need for UAD cards as mixing chores will be handled in the main control room, (and Samp 8's stuff is usually better for my needs than UAD anyway, expecially to give clients a 'down and dirty" ruff mix on the spot)

Anyone have any actual experience with these types of things? Coolness factor/suckage percentage?

Thanks.

I don't have personal experience but the local guy here who built my studio system (also a musician/studio owner) can't build these things fast enough to keep up with demand! He swears by them as being the way to go if you don't need a bunch of PCI slots. My understanding is that FW800 still needs some work (could be wrong about this tho as the bugs may be worked out?).

Regarding laptops, I wouldn't trust an off the shelf unit but I just saw the first audio optimized laptop this guy built from a basic Asus system and it is a killer! I'm lusting like crazy for that thing and would definitely prefer it over the shuttle for a remote rig.

So for the shuttles:
coolness factor=high,
suckage percentage=depends on whether you need PCI slots

THanks Dr...

The whole idea about laptops is field servicability to me...if the screen craters/gets busted, the entire machine is out of commission...with a desktop (or shuttle sized for that matter) a simple swap out is all it takes.

Who's your friend making the shuttle factor cases? I'd like to visit a bit with him if at all possible.

Laptop with a vga out mine's got one. No regrets less problems. Dell makes a great case plus laptop hardrives can take more abuse.
