Ok guys, I need your help again!
Here's what I want to do: I have to import a MIDI song into Pro Tools, so I can mute the drums and record while listening to the other stuff in the song. Here's what I did so far: I imported the song into Pro Tools. That gave me 16 channels of MIDI, all with stuff on them. OK so far. Then I need some virtual instrument to turn the MIDI into audio, right? So I went with Ableton Live. I know it works with Pro Tools through ReWire, but here is the problem. MIDI channels don't have the plugin buttons on them, so I can't put ReWire on them. But I guess I only need ReWire to RECEIVE the sound from Live, so I did this: I use a M-Audio Project Mix, so I mapped the 16 channels to M-Audio Control channels 1-16. Then, created an AUX channel, and activated ReWire in it. Then opened up Live. It starts as a Slave, and follows PT playback. Everything good so far. The default Live set comes with an audio channel and a MIDI channel. I configured the audio channel to send the audio to ReWire Out, as instructed by Ableton's site. But...I can't hear anything when I play the track! What am I missing here? May the Force be with you. |

There are two basic methods for midi via pro tools:
1) Midi track + Aux track 2) Instrument track (Midi/Aux combo-track) It sounds as though you may not have set up your midi inputs/outputs in ableton. Simply running it as a host app is not enough. You still have to set up input/outputs in both programs. Have you read the guide provided by Propellerhead.se (Propellerheads, creators of Reason and Rewire) They have a guide for using rewire with all of the different software that supports their open source rewire protocol. If you have not go here: http://www.propellerheads.se/learning/dsp_mainframe.cfm And click on the Ableton Live tutorial provided by propellerheads. I've found getting the info straight from "the horse's mouth" (*rewire creators*) is usually better than trying to follow the manuals given out with the host software. (Because usually they just gloss over the Rewire stuff) "It's the engineer's job to capture the moment. It's the Producer's job to manipulate the moment." --some guy at TapeOpCon |
