I'm trying to set up an 828mkII on my new G5. I've got the firewire plugged in at both ends (obviously) and it's powered up. The mac is telling me that it's installed correctly, but it's flat not seeing anything hooked up to the firewire port. I've looked at all the Audio/Midi setup stuff and it's just not seeing it. I'm not a Mac guy, so I don't know if there's sometihng really stupid that I'm missing. Any help?

Did you configure your hardware driver in the set up menu in DP?

I'm not running DP. I've got AudioDesk installed, but my problem is that the mac is not seeing the MOTU. It knows that SOMETHING is plugged into its firewire port, but it can't seem to figure out what that thing is. I installed all the MOTU software as per the MOTU manual, but it doesn't seem to see the 828...is there any way to manually install the drivers?

If system profiler is not noting anything on the firewire, I would think that you need a driver.
Load it up from your interface disk or go to MOTu downloads. firewirw driver |

Try the setup menu in Audiodesk (if it's the same as DP), and go to "audio hardware setup".
You need to click on the 828 in the list of devices to select it as your interface. If you have not already done this. |

I've installed the driver as per the MOTU install cd...my problem is that despite that install the mac can't tell what's attached to it's firewire port. Audiodesk won't allow me to select the 828 because it doesn't know that's what's connected to the firewire port. I've got the drivers on that MOTU page, and I've uninstalled and reinstalled them to see if I was doing something wrong. I'm gonna try one more time and see what happens...

What OS are you on? Try repairing permissions. Audio/MIDi setup shoud be your 1st step. Then go to MOTU console which should be linked to "hardware setup" within Audiodesk. Sometimes you just need to go directly to the consol. At least w/ DP. not sure about AD though.
If not, try swapping FW cables. T |

I'd make sure first that you have the latest of everything driver/OS-wise, at least the latest for your OS. Make sure the 8282 is functioning properly. Obviously the first order of buisness would be to determine whether the problem is in the software, hardware 828 or the Mac firewire.

just updated OS and got the newest MOTU driver...working with MOTU tech support to get this puppy running...and putting Plextors in the 3 pc's in the room...and doing billing and uploading some voiceovers...GAAAHH!!! It's a nice problem to have, lots of work...but it's a problem nonetheless!! I realized sometime last night that the mac doesn't even see anything connected to the firewire port...so it's back to square 1...

Open up "About This Mac" from the mac menu on the far left. Now click "more info" and click on "Firewire" from the hardware contents.
Does the Mac recognize any firewire devices at all? It'd be helpful if you had anything else firewire hooked up to test. Maybe you have a blown firewire port. Have you tried other ports? All the best, Henry Robinett |

We think we narrowed it down to a bad 828. We're going to return it and try a new one, because we plugged in an HD cam and some other stuff that it recognized right away...so we'll know more in a day or two when we can get a new one into the studio.
