Great for rap

IMHO, great for rock music as well. I don't think you're going to fool any engineers..but the general public will not know.

Great tool. I give it a 9 out of 10.

To quote myself from another thread:

quote:
I produce mostly hip hop, it gives my drums a "real feel" but still a punchy dance vibe. Not to mention, you can completely change the drums, cymbals, placement, room mic, pzm, directs, etc. etc. What a beautiful program.

For those of us who have a modest set up, don't own killer PAIRS of drums, don't have a killer drum room, and don't have access (or money) to a killer player.....BFD is the answer.

I understand Drumagog is developing a drum replacement program to work along with BFD...can't wait for that. It will help tremendously with my rock recordings.

YMMV..I love it...

In other words....BUY IT!

I'm using it. With careful programming it can be pretty convincing. The user interface is a lot of fun, and it actually comes with several different versions of the plug that have more or fewer separate outputs. The new 1.5.x version also includes a new 'ultra' version with individual outs for each separate mic, on each separate drum (over 30 outputs from one plug), if you're really crazy, but even with the 'multi' or 'groups' output versions of the plug, you can still 'mix' the mics within the plugin itself.

Sounds great, a lot of fun to use, and lets you make 'sequenced drums' that don't make you wanna cringe. Highly recommended.

Yeah, I'd like to add I'm not a fan of the preprogrammed beats, and I doubt you will be either so a lot of programming is in store. Some of the straight up beats will definetly work for straight up songs, but anything a little different requires something original IMO.

I have heard of outside companies that sell beats for BFD that are (from what I hear) substantially better than the ones it comes with.

For the "just keep a beat" type rock song the beats it comes with are definetly good enough though, so don't let this discourage you from buying.

Argh. They just released a new 55 gig expansion pack recorded at Electrical Audio with an Albini-esqe micing setup. $249 is more than reasonable, but I'm already going in with my writing/recording partner on Quantum Leap "RA" this week as it is. I really am going to have to get a separate drive for sample collections sooner rather than later at this rate. Sigh...

New pack doesn't sound like anything I'd be into, based on the clips.

BFD makes havin an electronic Drumkit a blast. Turns a slightly expanded Yamaha DTXPress kit into some bad mojo =) Always fun to use it live and see the drum bums tryin to figure out how I am gettin the classic kit tones from such a dinky kit....=)

Does to me - drier, alterna-indie-hipster-rock-sounding drum sampled kits? Right up my stuck-in-the-late-80's alley.

One quick comment: I use BFD a lot, and it is a great tool (though I also use DKFHS C&V a lot, as well).

However, be forewarned about their latest expansion kit: Deluxe. It is loaded with fantastic sounds, but it is VERY demanding on RAM and CPU even with the moderate install. I'll wager the full install would cripple most machines.

This is not at all a criticism - just an FYI. Best-of-breed app Smile
