hello world! I was wondering if anyone knows how/if I can hook up a PowerMac G4 (500MHz 10/100 Ethernet) and a Dell 8250 to my studio as extra sound modules (we'd put EastWest Symphonic Orchestra on one and maybe the Symphonc Choirs on the other)? They're both excellent machines and I would hate to see them go to waste. My studio consists of Pro Tools LE 7, Logic Pro 7, a PowerBook G4 (which will soon be substituted with the G5 quad), and two 250GB Glyph drives. If anyone can help, or even give me a direction to go in for help, I would be really greatful.

thanks.

Well...I'm using an old G3/266 to run DP3 in MIDI only mode as a sequencer.

Anything that's straight samples, the G4 should handle fine--assuming it's got serious RAM. I'm not sure from the model number how new the PC is...assuming you're not recording at 96k, ADAT cards all around makes the best interconnect, I think.

Hi HR,

Here are two leads:

  • This month's issue of "Virtual Instruments" magazine has an article about networking PCs and Macs for audio

Try this link: http://www.virtualinstrumentsmag.com/issue.html

I haven't read the article, but I heard about it. That's pretty lame, I know, but it's the best I can do.

Let me know if you think it's any good.

Hmmm...I just subscribed online to Virtual Instruments. It seemed like a good deal ($13/year). Took a peak at the LAN article, and it looked very helpful. It's something I might consider (linking a couple of PC's).
