From what I've heard the new iMac with the intel processor is faster than the PowerMac G5 depending on what types applications you're running. Does anyone know how they compare when it comes to working with recording apps? Of course there's always the factor that the PowerMac is a tower with room for your PCI cards and stuff but it would be interesting to know if the new iMac can run at equal or faster speed with audio apps.
Yeah...it's WAY too early, IMO, for anyone other than a web surfer to adopt the Intel Macs.
Speedwise, DP will probably hurt the worst from the change. They've never had x86 code. Steinberg and Logic and ProTools do--it should be just a matter of patching together the Apple API calls with the underlying Intel code base from the Windows versions.
And as quickly as things change in Apple's world, it's always best to buy the whole system...and look at any future expansion as a "plus". So, right now, there's not an audio system, save LogicPro--and if you need third party plugs and DSP cards, etc...it's still not a complete system.
If someone said to me today, "You've got to muy a new Mac...I'd buy a G5. Wouldn't think twice about it. Next year? Probably a whole new OS...all Intel machines-most stuff ported...bugs being worked out...but, right now-G5 all the way.
