hey

I'm testing a rig for the studio project I'm working on.

Pro Tools on a PC (brand new Dell9150 dual core).

BFD Lite was included in the set of plugins.

This whole groove, MIDI and triggering thing has me a little spazzed out.

To run BFD I can either trigger the grooves from within the plug itself, or trigger them from a sepaprate MIDI track in PT (which is what I WANT to do).

Triggering grooves by clicking on them when a groove set and kit is loaded is really easy within BFD, and they run instantaneously. Even clicking on them so they trigger half way thru a 4 bar groove, they update and play the new groove straight away.

The big problem is, when I set up a MIDI track in PT and place a MIDI note into the track to the corresponding note number to trigger a groove in BFD, the thing triggers some and not others.

Its a PITA!

I've tried changing play options in BFD, placing the MIDI note early so it's got time to cue up the next groove....but that still doesnt work.

I see posts in other forums saying BFD is a resource hog. So far, in this session, that's all I'm running!!

I dont want to print it as audio because that wont allow me to "mix" the mic placement stuff that is so cool within BFD.

any tips...please? Smile

cheers
T

Tube, let me first say I haven't worked with BFD, but I'll offer whatever help I can. The way I do, what I think you're trying to, in Groove Agent is to setup the basic beat in Groove Agent and select the option in the control panel to send the midi out to the sequencer. At this point I record the midi information onto a midi track, since I selected Groove Agent as my input. This will give me the midi track for a full song, complete with fills if I want it. At which point I could go in and monkey around with the fills.

Now this is the workflow if you have the midi notes triggering individual drums and not rhythms, follow? If you have it set up to trigger a full groove each time you hit a midi note...well....I'm not sure I'll be able to offer much there. At first I was thinking it would work like other groove programs where each slice of the groove is played on a corresponding midi note, but that may not be the case. If one midi note plays a full groove, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to have the midi note trigger the groove, as long is everything is routed appropriately, whenever you want the groove to play. Am I off base here?

Check the help file to see if it mentions sending the midi information to your sequencer.

hey Jon, thanks for the reply.
Sorry I took so long to get back.

I understand your workflow to record the MIDI info coming out of groove agent (or BFD) onto a MIDI track. I'm not sure that BFD can do that. I'll check but that might be a way to get it close. and then move the MIDI notes around afterwards in 'Tools to correspond to the parts of the song.

I'll give that a try. It might work. Thanks for that.

What I want to do is as you described. Send one MIDI note to set off a corresponding groove.

It seems strange that this simple thing chokes it. As I can trigger off grooves at will remotely using the mouse, with no choking whatsoever.

Anyway, I'll try more stuff.

cheers
