Hi, I have 2 pc's hooked up. One for the web and one for just music (i even disabled all network capabilities). Is it possible to get a firewire/USB2 hard drive and leave it hooked up to both computers so I don't have to burn a cd every time I go back and forth?

Any brand/model recommendations here?

I doubt that you could have the drive actively connected to both PC's at the same time, but you shoud be able to plug an external usb drive into one pc then unplug it and connect it to the other to do transfers.

I recently got a Lacie firewire/USB "d2" I think. 160gb. Fucking flies. Really nice unit IMO. It has f/w 800 ports which can be used (with an optional adaptor) to chain the thing into more than one f/w enables appliance. Dunno if this would work like you are asking.

I have used it both with usb2 and f/w and it works flawlessly, transferring large DV files from a camera via f/w straight thru to usb2.

product info here:
http://www.lacie.com/au/products/product.htm?pid=10023

It also came with all cables (except the f/s 800 > 400 adaptor)...plus power supply.

Tube

I was kinda hoping one of those drives firewire and USB2 could be used with both at the same time, but they are probably all jumpered or something. Frown switching back and forth isn't too big of a deal... but it would be nice to have kind of a "central server" between my computers without dealing with setting up a network.

Looks like a cool drive, Tube.

I emailed Lacie and they said it would either damage the computer or the drive.

Hope I didn't give you no ideas there, Tube. Wink

No, you wouldn't and wouldn't want to do anything like that. However, you could mount (connect) one drive to one machine, then network that drive via windows networking to the other machine.

Yeah, but right now I have all networking disabled (actually deleted from the OS) on my DAW system...

I think I'll just get a USB key and use that to move files to and fro. It sure would be easier to use Windows Networking, but I really don't want any kind of networking enabled on that machine... I'm sick of reformatting and losing stuff. If I'd only suffered a couple of these nightmares I might be green enough to risk it... but I've had literally hundreds... A sick waste of time.
