Hey, guys – I just checked and we've had almost 100 new members sign up for Studio Forums in the last month. That's nearly three times the rate of new members joining as we've had in the past.

Studio Forums is growing. We just beefed up the server space at Infopop.

Studio Forums has had a very high signal-to-noise ratio since it was started over two years ago. And I'd like to keep things that way. I'd ask that the older members please be helpful and courteous to the newer members. And show people how cool we can keep things around here. I've noticed some of the threads getting a little "rough and tumble" lately – and that's going to happen sometimes. But also, at the same time, please keep in mind that new people who join will post and act in the same way they see other older members here posting and acting. So, please set a good example. Keep the threads on topic. Assume goodwill, and give people the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks!

Anyone who's established here and is a "regular" is essentially a host for many of the new members who join Studio Forums. The regulars set the tone of the place. So far we've been pretty cool, and I'd like to keep things that way.

A good friend of mine is Howard Rheingold. He's been my mentor for building online communities for many years, and I've been an associate of Howard's on some projects. Howard's widely regarded as "The father of virtual community". He wrote a rant that I'd like anyone who cares about Studio Forums and its future growth to please read:

Excellent link Dan.

I am amazed at how well you host here along with all the other projects with Sound Pure, The Listening Sessions and your own recording projects.

I extended an invitation to all at Dijonstock.com (the AW16Q forum) a week or so ago.

great link Dan, I see you are very much an exemplar of that bloke's writings!

I was just thinking, perhaps seeing as there are so many new members, it might be time for another PM out to everyone.

I remember that I had joined SF after finding a link from the Listening Sessions, but I didnt post for ages, and forgot about it....until you sent out a broadcast.

Been visiting nearly every day since then, and that was a couple of years ago now...

Most of us do Henry, it's sort of human nature, especially in a society that is so hectic.
I certainly have been very guilty of this, it's the reason I'm reading these things. Smile
I am much better at it, but still have my moments just like everybody else.

Here's a few favorites quotes on communication:

Author Unknown:
Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

Argentine Proverb:
Who speaks, sows; Who listens, reaps.

Henry David Thoreau:
The language of friendship is not words but meanings.

Robert Schuller:
Big egos have little ears.

Henry Link:
If you wish to make a man your enemy, tell him simply, "You are wrong." This method works every time.

Oliver Wendell Holmes:
It is the province of knowledge to speak, and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen.

Winston Churchill:
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

Andre Gide:
Everything has been said before, but since nobody listens we have to keep going back and beginning all over again. Big Grin

Dale Carnegie:
When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion.

Unknown author:
When you are arguing with a fool, make sure he isn't doing the same thing.

William Boetcker:
You cannot raise a man up by calling him down.

Zig Ziglar:
When you exercise your freedom to express yourself at the lowest level, you ultimately condemn yourself to live at that level.

Dale Carnegie:
The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.

Unknown author:
The basic building block of good communications is the feeling that every human being is unique and of value.

Ralph Waldo Emerson:
Who you are is speaking so loudly that I can't hear what you're saying.

Ambrose Bierce:
Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.

Larry King:
I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I'm going to learn, I must do it by listening.

Henry Ford:
If there is any great secret of success in life, it lies in the ability to put yourself in the other person’s place and to see things from his point of view - as well as your own.

I wonder if he thought that applied to Jewish persons, too. I hate Michigain Nazis. Not that I disagree with the idea, just the man.

As a new member I really appreciate this post Dot, and I have been concious of the fact that it seems like a lot of you guys have been around here for a while. Not only I am new to this board but I'm somewhat new to recording and I hope some of the more experienced members realize that us newbies really do appreciate the fact that we can ask you questions. I feel like this is one of the most b/s free message boards I have seen on any subject and I don't want to be a part of messing that up.

Thanks again Dot! Also sorry if I'm not even supposed to be looking at this thread Wink

...or having too much spare time to post instead of actually getting anything done, procrastinating by spending hours looking at web forums instead of recording, etc.
