lol you have a point. But my logic behind it is if the chatroom is open 24/7 then we all know that we wont be anxious to go on it at any special time.

If its only open a certain amount of time a day we will attract a bigger audience, if its open 24/7 people will be on it at their own convience and therefore not alot of users will be on at the same time. My point is if there is a standard time it will attract the highest total audience and in return give everyone more tech support and the help they need.

For example, if I really need to talk to Dot, and the hours are 5:00-8:00 I will go on at that time. Instead of guessing when he will be on. Granted he cannot be on everyday at the same time, but it will give people a better idea what is happening and when it is happening.

Anyone agree?

here is my philosophy if you end up having a certain time to chat some other people cant make it (time zones, to busy)so having a free chat room thats super easy to use (irc) then it makes sense and people can chat the night away its almost like someone of you here are trying to regulate when people can talk and not talk kinda silly MrT

I think it was stated pretty clearly above why SF doesn't want/need 24/7 chat. Posting last forever, chat had extreme authentification problems, and it was promoting unproductivity and wasting some serious time, among other things.

There are still chats out there.

dalnet #proaudio ... This one is great. I'm not so sure anyone there has ever made a recording, and Behringer is many times above the conversation level.

audiolot.com #proaudio ... This is a nice chat, unfortunatly its rarely more than Kittonian and Yoda1977 idling.

GearSlutz now has a chatroom, and if you visit them you will find out in about 30 seconds (if you last that long) one of the reasons why SF chat didn't last. There are more people trying to destroy that room with false entrys, invisible and duplicate names do to the bugs in the software than actual people to talk to. And the discussion is generally what the best 1 million and under console is, and what someones 805th mic should be... or the differences between the Telefunken USA 251 and the Soundelux 251. Out of my league even if the fakes and people trying to destroy the chat room weren't there. To its glory in the 5 hours I idled there the other day I did sneak about 5 minutes of pretty good convo in... time sink.

Thats all the recording-esque chats I know about. Maybe if they each combine their good qualitys there could be one decent one (for a tweener like me Smile ).

SF chat could have filled the mold, but all the issues were still there. And I don't think anyone knew how to make the problems in the software, and IRC learning curves go away.

We tried.

maybe its only idling cause people are creating music and saying chatting cause people to not be creative is ignorent and irc is one of the more simple programs to use MrT

True, however on a positive note - top engineer Mike Shipley (Aerosmith etc) has been dropping by quite frequently + The Black Eyed Peas engineer + someone SWEARS BLIND that he got Andy Wallace to log in while he was at their facility.

Some twits HAVE indeed been goofing around but their days are numbered. I cant give a way too much but dont discount gearslutz.com chat for good, positive changes are coming soon!

Rock on!

Jules,

I've had nothing but good experiences with your chat interface and the conversations. We ended up chatting about things other than audio (thank God). But, a good mix of folks as you said from name guys down to people wanting to learn.

I was the one who's post Jules was commenting on... I was there tonight and it's a major improvement over the first few times I visited. It's actually been OK for a while now... just dead most of the day and night (6-10 Central time) seems to be a good time to chat there.

Granted, the posting method in a thread is a bit slower than the chat rooms, but the same thing is accomplished. One just has to wait a bit longer to get replies.
If it is a pain in the butt to maintain a chat room, then why do it?
Don't get me wrong, I like chat rooms. But if Dan could put his time to better use, and if the chat room seems to be detracting from Studio Forums growth, then I say bag it.
Just my 2 cents.

I think the idea for a chat room should be only during the hours when the most users will be on. For example M-F 5:00-9:00 Sa-Su- 3:00-6:00. The hours can start off small till we gain a bigger crowd, and then we can expand hours.

Remember the net is world-wide, and you will have users from all over the world - what's a good time for you is likely to be bad for them...

What you've just typed is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever seen. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this forum is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Chats are traditionally organized and scheduled. Topics set forth, etc... I find that if a chat is really wanted/needed, that folks will pull it together on their own. When I'm working with others on music sometimes we'll just pull up our AOL, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! Messengers (or whatever else people use today) and do it that way. It's amazing that this topic has gone on so long with so little said. But that's the great thing about forums; everybody gets to say something - good, bad, right, wrong or indifferent. Kirk
