Harman Kardon CD Carousel

$54.98 shipped to my door. It's a refurb, but I'm just using it for reference discs in the studio. It still has a 1 year warranty. I was going to buy used but thought this would be better.

I thought I would have it made with the pc's cd-rom for reference, but I have to switch between software programs just to get output on my soundcard! I needed something for A/B of mixes through my mixer's tape input.

Thought I'd share.

Look to be a bargin, hope it works out.

I haven't seen Harmon Cardon in a long time. Good stuff. Their linear tracking turn tables used to freak me out a little. Tre' Chic.

I may look into this as well. My CD player just shit the bed, I'm using one of my CD recorders at the moment.

Ironically I had to take mine out of the rack to use with my stereo!!!

You should be fine with a tray.

Humbucker or Mercenary, maybe even Frontend could hook you up. Wink

Or even some angle Iron and a couple well measured holes. How wide is it?

Shane has a 2U rack tray I'm going to snag and see if it'll work.

You think Front End Audio could hook me up? Hmmm...oh the advantages... Smile I've bought a few things a little cheaper lately I guess.

Wow, good find! Harman/Kardon makes decent electronics--my stepfather has a Harmon/Kardon integrated amp from maybe '83 or '84, still sounds fine and works like a champ--not too bad a run! I'm a fan of rack trays, I just wish they weren't so frickin expensive for what you get (a big tray with holes)

Those linear trackers are funky, I didn't know Harman made them--a friend of mine has a Bang & Olufsen TX2 linear tracker--very strange. A turntable with controls like a cd player Eek scary! (On a side note, that same friend is buying my old AR ES-1/Linn Basik turntable--a whole different direction, it's so fully manual, you have to take the platter off and flip the belt to a different pulley if you want 45 RPM Big Grin)

Update, I received the changer.

It's OK for home use, but I've found it to be a little lacking sonically. Low end is lacking somewhat, highs aren't as defined, overall lacking in punch. The output level is also pretty low, even the headphone amp is weak.

I think I'm going to use this one in my house and move my Sony into the studio. This thing just isn't going to make a good reference, but fine for non-critical stuff like my kids dancing around to their cd's! Smile

War, what kind of interconnects are you using with it?

I've gone completely to single CD players these days. I've yet to find a changer that can hold up for any critical listening. Still, a Harman changer for that price can't be beat!

Hell, I got a pair of the brand new hot-off-the-presses Clements 106 speakers in warranty exchange for my old 105s which are no longer available, and the new 106s are SO damn GOOD (!!!) that they've taken the place of the 107s that I had in my hifi setup...kind of a bummer in a way, as I was going to use the 105s in the studio to check mixes on, but now the 106s and 107s are both too big for studio use (and the 106s just sound too GOOD to not use with tube amps)...so now the 107s are going in my bedroom and the little JBLs in my bedroom are going into the studio along side my KRKs...so I know alllll about shuffling gear between home and studio Smile

If you don't mind a single disc player (I think they are the way to go), NAD makes a great player for the buck and last I heard, they wre using Burr Browns. Hard to beat that player.

I personally use a Marantz CD5000 and it's also good bang for the buck CDP--I felt it sounded close to some Rotels i heard in the $700-900 range--maybe a tad bright and lean, but whatcha gonna do, it's a CDP Big Grin ;p. I bought my Marantz as a demo unit for around $225 if I recall. The D/AC's decent and they use very high quality transports, soemthing that most budget players cheap out on. If you can find the Marantz CD4000, it's like the CD5000 but missing a couple gimmicks and is a bit cheaper. A company called Aha! uses OEM CD4000s as the basis for thier tube modified Njoe Tjoeb CD players, if that says anything.

I promise I will stop rambling now Wink Big Grin

I don't know if it's Burr Brown's fault, I wasn't expecting a perfect piece by any means. It is a bit lacking in low end punch and clarity, just isn't as sizzly either.

I'm running through my RCA 2 track monitor on my board, same as I did with my Fostex CR300 (should have kept that thing!) and the Fostex was smokin' good with a nice hot output.

Again, I'm probably going to just move my Sony out there and this one inside. It's not that it's bad, but for reference I am mostly judging low end and this ain't going to cut it.

Worth $50 for home use! I'm not sending it back.

War, was the Fostex output +4dB?

If it's tighter, punchier bass, clean high end, and inproved imaging you're looking for, next time you have some money for a rainy day you might consider upgrading the RCA interconnects--off the top of my head, you could find an affordable used pair of AudioQuest Diamondback, Kimber PBJ, Acoustic Zen Oscar, and some others...Dot had recommended some nice looking, well priced cables to me in an old thread, and I just can't remember the name, but these might be worth looking into...this is all assuming you don't need too long a run, at any rate...if You need more than a couple meters, it gets very expensive, unfortunately.

i don't know about the rest of your rig, nor what you're using for cables now, but it might work for you, and would be much cheaper than getting a new CDP...

NOW I promise to stop rambling Big Grin Big Grin

Dirty, I must admit I'm using cheapo RCA cables. But, FWIW they are the same cheapos that my Fostex blew this player away in sound with.

The last 1/2 dozen CD players and changers I've been buying, several in the ~$100 range (well except for 1 portable), all have digital outs, so I can use an external DAC like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3079778543&category=14978

the above is one i'm selling, but I'd be the first to admit there are better ones available, though at much higher prices.

To me personally, it doesn't matter if it's optical or coax, but the digital out feature has really been useful for me, to use the cd player just as a transport.

My first changer, a 100 cd circular Pioneer thingy has been working great for 5 years, I love the random feature.
