SF is growing well, and looking for forum ideas.

One I've thought of - that wouldn't even have to be super busy, but would provide a space and a service for members - would be a forum where each member could start one topic for their own studio. A place for folks to put up pics, gear lists, whatever - sort of a reference. I think we get into conversations sometimes - and it would help if you could click on a topic that would have a members' studio info - to give everyone a better idea of what's going on. I also think it will help with making recommendations and playing around with ideas. Not all members have actual websites for their studios. I don't even have a site for my studio.

Maybe call it something like "My Studio Journal" forum. A place to keep pics and notes, progress reports. Basically, just documenting what you're doing. I think as it would build up over months and years - it could become a powerful tool. People are always asking for gear recommendations or some kind of info on SF, and many of us, invariably, have to ask about what other kind of gear they're using and what they're recording. If we encouraged members to keep - even on a super basic level - some sort of topic documenting their studio - including how and what they mostly record - I think everyone would wind up better for it.

We could then have members either make a link in their sig to their "studio topic" or we'd put together a master list with links somewhere - or both. Members could even carry a link to their "studio topic" in their sig in other forums. It'd sort of give people the ability to make a "mini website" that could be used as reference to aid them and others when discussing aspects of their studio.

Anyway. That's an idea. You guys got any ideas for new forums?

Dot, I really like this idea! It would be a good reference, too--so we can see where a given poster is coming from. I'd definitely participate in a SF member's studio forum.

I like that idea. In fact, I have that on my bands website. I would link to it.

I have pics, a gear list, songs/lyrics, and info. on how I'm recording.

Wonderful idea. I'm almost done setting up my humble recording room (after spending 6 months reconstructing the rest of the house) so I'm ready!

Great Idea!

It will also let us follow peoples gear experiences and education, so that we can see the.. "Wow, this Behringer Thingywot is great" turn into.. "Well it's ok, ...but" and finally.."Now I understand what everyone meant about the Behringer being crappy".

What a great idea. My wife is right into an artform called "scrapbooking". Some forums relative to that art have personal spaces for blogs and such where members post their progress/notes etc. It's pretty cool.

I honestly cannot think of anything else for SF. There is so much value here for everyone already IMHO, with the links to studio reviews, the listening sessions, and the info contained in each of the forums - anything else is just icing on the cake!

Plus - it's all free! Some other forums actually charge a membership for this kinda stuff.

But, I will try to think of something.

That is a way cool idea. Waytogo

If we post mp3's and stuff in the section will those be cleared out during your regular house keeping of the forum or will you try to leave those for later reference? It would be nice if others could post their progress from "tracking", to "rough mix", to "final mastered" copy. This would be great for having something to compare our own mixes to throughout the process.

The only other type of forum I could think to add - that I'd really like to discuss with enough regularity to devote to a whole forum, anyway - might be too 'off topic' for the board, but...we spend a lot of time talking about how to record, and what to record with. What I see as my main problem is what to record, and why we record. Something akin to Ronan's "if you want to write and demo songs, just get a four track", along with "great...my computer, my monitors, my mics, and my outboard each separately cost more than my car...now I just need to come up with a song to record". Something more about that other brain hemisphere, though...I worry sometimes about spending too much time thinking, worrying, reading, and writing about technique, equipment, and capturing sounds, and not enough on coming up with ideas and inspirations to turn into sounds that are worth recording. All this recording, editing, mixing, processing, and mastering are just a means to communicate or document something...but what is that something; why did you get into this?

Maybe that's just a thread, and not a whole forum, though...or maybe I'm going off the 'hippie dippy inspirational art happening' deep end.

Terrific Idea - give us all a chance to learn a lot!
I like the 'why do we record' idea; perhaps that could be combined with songwriting advice or critiques. Just on method, lyric, etc. I for one, need lots of help.
Dot - thanks for being so open minded, means a lot to us all.

Forever looking for that perfect take...........

Howza Bout a chat room or 3? Always seems to be a handful of people on at the same time. Plus maybe we could organize a common topic chat every once in a while with a special "guest star".

Work with me here: Studio Forums with special guest, Karl Malden - with the Streets of San Francisco theme song in the background. Ok maybe not Karl Malden :P

Might be fun to talk to yall in real time, no?

Great idea.

That'd be great if you could open something like "listening sessions 2" where the topic would be the gear & everybody could post samples using that gear. So those samples could stay while you remove the other media.

Regards,

We actually have a really nice chat room at http://studioforums.com/eve/chat

Anyone here is certainly welcome to use it.

Since there's no way of knowing if anyone's in chat unless you actually look, it never really gets going. I have proposed to the company that runs the forum's software to make the number of users in chat visible from the main page. We'll see how that goes.
