I know that forums start to get a bit redundant with GS, RAP, RO, etc. but I would really like SF to become my home. (The free gear has absolutely nothing to do with that.
The studio acoustics forum that Ethan hosts over at RO. He is very knowledgeable and very patient with newbies like me asking the same questions over and over. Maybe we could steal him I'd also like to see a newbie slanted Tech forum. This is something that interests me but often times the stuff at RO or even GS now is over my head. Maybe someone who has the same patience as Ethan but in a Tech format. Maybe DIY projects where the moderator could give step by step instructions. Maybe even supplying the instructions for the next module on Monday. Answer questions about it all week and give the next installment the next Monday. Perhaps SF could even sell the kits and make a little money to keep it afloat or members could pool resources and get quantity buys on components. Lots of ideas. Jason A. |

Jason, I think a DIY Tech 101 kinda' forum would be great. I'm sure we could get some folks in here to walk people through some basic DIY projects. Dave Royer's big into stuff like that. And I just got an email last night from Peter Cornell at 1176neve.tripod.com about some op-amps.
Sure, we could do that. Great ideas! Keep 'em coming and let's keep taking and get input from general SF populace. Dan Richards Digital Pro Sound The Listening Sessions |

I know Mike Rivers has an article in this months Recording (I think) magazine about basic electrical flow. Maybe he could start from the beginning like that here and work his way up. Stuff like that makes a great interactive primer and reference material (eg. Harvey's mic thread). Another side benefit is it give people another reason to come back to your website. Which is great for banner advertisers.
Some other names that pop in my head are Scott Dorsey and maybe Eddie Ciletti but I'm sure there are countless people who are up to the task. I'm already getting excited. Maybe I should go out and get a soldering iron. Which end gets hot again? Jason A. [This message was edited by Jason A. on 09-03-03 at 03:04 PM.] |

Dot, I was going to suggest Mr. Royer to you in a private message but since you mention it here...

Someone in Steve's forum is asking about making their own cables.
I was thinking this would make a great first project. Thoughts? Jason A. |

Yeah, a Tech Forum would be great!
And I'd really like to see a Musician's Forum also. -tkr ______________________________ 'Cause I don't wanna read the book, I'll watch the movie. |

I second that tech idea.
I like to look at the various projects in the tech section at R.O, but all of the participants seem to already know the various pieces of equipment, why they are considered to be "vintage" designs, and why they are interested in replicating them. Often, all too often perhaps, they don't fully identify the piece of equipment, or its intended function. I have gotten halfway through a paragraph only to realize that I'm not sure what the piece being discussed actually does. Is it a preamp, a limiter, or what? Why would transformers be hard to find? Are some op amps better than others for audio, and if so, why, and which are the good ones? Maybe we could have a sticky at the top of this tech page that discusses and explains the various pieces, and why they are being cloned. An explanation of just what particular attributes are seen as desirable would also be good, along with an explanation of manufacturers designations such as the groups of numbers being tossed around. As far as I know, an 1176 could be a tail light for a '49 Ford! Finally, parts lists or even complete sets of parts with PC's would also be a blessing, as I'm an old Heathkit builder. Soldering irons at the ready, gentlemen? "Wait a minute. Tom flys Britney Spears and I'm flying Madelaine Albright?" |

MP3/mix forum sounds good to me if they put all the equipment they use. I hate the fact that I never see what type of guitar with what pickup or the type of drums. There as important as any thing else.

Hey this place is very nice, I am happy to have found it. But Jaison, which arguments do you have to say that RO and Gearslutz are redundant?
When you have some free time, take a look at the plugin room at RO. David and I have been doing a very nice job. Thanks Eng. Alécio Costa Studio Digital Performance Music Producer/Singer/Musician http://br.geocities.com/studiodigitalp |

quote: Thanks for the invite. I might stop in and browse a bit. As for the redundant statement, I merely meant to say that all of these forums can begin to get a little redundant after a while. It's only natural since there are only so many pieces of gear (and many of the forums seem gear oriented). But my point was to have a Tech forum that is a little different take on the normal tech thing that you see over at RO or GS. Now I will admit that the Tech forum at RO is a lot more DIY oriented than GS. I would like to see that taken one step further and not only cater to newer techs but have a more organized approach to it. Like walking us through projects in increasing amounts of difficulty. Bottom line, I just don't want SF to be a "me-too" forum. I'd like to see a reason for us to exist along side other forums. Jason A. |
