Initial impressions...
Figure tube mic...so I plugged it all in, turned it on and went to eat...figured it'd be warmed up when I got back. Lots of staticy kind of crackling, though. Odd...wiggling it's proprietary cable did little...but, it's weird-like there was something on the diaphragm or something...after I sang into it a few minutes, it went away-hasn't returned. Is this the one that's supposed to sound like an 87? Cause it has a very similar high end/upper mid bump. It's eerie, actually. However the lower mids don't match the smooth natural response of the Neumann. But, that's nitpicky, I think...seeing as how this retails for like a 3rd of a new U87ai...and I've never even used a new 87, so, FWIW. It's funny, that rise of an 87 was once borderline harsh on my voice. Now, it sounds nice. At the time, the TLM193 tamed me a bit-in a good way. As I sit here A-Bing tracks done with it and my TLM193...the ADK sounds immediately better. Airy, open...but, the more you listen, you here a more real kind of fundamental in the Neumann...if only I could combine that fundamental response with the airy highend of the ADK. I'll play around with different pres...keep experimenting...but, my initial impression is nice mic. That upper mid strident sound would probably like to have a "sweet" sounding preamp...we'll see how it fares with the DMP3. Wish I had a UA or Tampa around... |

Thanks for the feedback, Pop
Have you used a Soundelux U195? If so, I'm curious how the ADK would compare? __________________________________ Because I felt like it, you stupid machine. |

quote: No. BTW...tried a few more things. DMP3-did sweeten a bit...but not much. It's amazing to me how much the DPS24 preamps sound like the Great River, albeit a bit more stridenton this mic. But, the overall character is similar, IMO. Conga...fared pretty well--the boost gave a pretty nice "snap" to it. Sounded pre-eq'd. Acoustic gtr...won't be trying that again...not the forte here. I can tell from these it won't go near an amp, either--way too much strident highs. You know, I wonder how much diff a NOS tube would make? Cause there's really kind of a paperiness to the sound I heard in my Bassman before I threw Teslas in... What's that mic Kid Rock is singing into in the video with Sheryl Crow? "Picture"...I don't know if that's like the actual mic they used, but this sounds like that...lotsa high end-kinda empty in the middle. I think that song's an interesting one in that regard-she sounds fab (tone wise) and he sound like ass in direct comparison. |

Anyone have links to mods for the ADK line? The sort of paperiness is very much the same thing I heard from my Bassman prior to switching it's tubes from GTs to Teslas.
There doesn't appear to be any screws on this thing-I have no idea how I would take it apart to replace the tube... |

The bottom part screws off of the top (grill) part. It's 2 pieces. You can't expose the capsule without unscrewing some real screws inside the mic. But the body of the mic slips off so you can change the tube and see how beautiful the craftsmanship is.
I am 98% sure that's how it is based on my CE and looking at a picture of the TC. -Dusty |

Got it...thanks, Dusty.
I've been having some noise issues with it...little intermittent garbled sounds...like a bad tube...or as I found when I opened it-a lead to the tube was dangling. I guess they solder wires to the tube to save $$ on the ceramic socket? It'll make changing it a bitch. You know, I just happened to be reading over at Manley's site that their ref series used to use 6072s until the NOS on the market got to the point where they were too noisy. So, they've switched to 12ax7s...and have the wiring schematics on how to convert the older ones if need be. |
