Come hang at the beach! Sunday evening January 21st through Saturday, January 27th, 2007.

TLS is putting together an intensive week-long recording and music production workshop.

We're gonna pull out all the stops on this one. We'll be recording bands and musicians. Playing with and listening to loads of gear. We'll even make sure everyone gets a little time to spend at the beach and/or a round of golf. Great weather and seafood to die for!

I'll use this topic to post some of the things we'll be doing and the approach we'll be taking.

We're putting up info at http://www.thelisteningsessions.com/TLS2007workshop.htm

Also using this topic for any Q&A; peeps might have.

Bill, most days will kick off at 11:00AM. We'll have one day, probably Wednesday, that'll get started later - maybe 1:00PM - just to break things up a bit. [We'll probably be out late Tuesday night.] We'll usually go until 5-6:00PM. And then take a dinner break. There will also be evening sessions on several of the days. We'll start back at 7-8:00PM and go until about midnight.

The class sessions will be treated the same way as recording sessions. Regimented in what needs to be accomplished, but loose as far as how we go about it. Each session will be goal-oriented.

There will be no "typical" days. We're not going to sit and spend much time talking about theory. We're going to be in the trenches setting up, tuning up, recording, tweaking, listening, learning.

As an example: One of the things we'll be getting into early on is drums. Getting good drums separates the men from the boys. A good drum sound can make or break a recording. We'll be dissecting and exploring all phases of drum tuning, acoustics, miking techniques, troubleshooting problems [buzzing, phasing, ringing, etc], editing of drum tracks, timing/groove, drum replacement [Drumagog], different types of drum sounds for different kinds of music, mixing drums. Everyone will work hands on with their own drums and mics. Everyone will have a music project that they work on throughout the week. We'll also put more time into specific approaches based on who comes to the workshop and what they want to learn. Even people who don't have the ability to record drums in their studio will learn how to build real drum tracks from scratch with some simple production techniques and approaches.

We are also having each person who signs up fill out a questionaire with information about what kinds of music they record and their own individual recording situation, and what they'd like to learn in the workshop. We'll base some of what's covered in the workshop - and the production styles and techniques - on who's coming and what they want to learn.

The goal for the workshop is to expose people to an intense week of recording, production and studio-related tricks and techniques in such a way that they leave with a set of tools and an experience that changes - for the better - the way they approach the recording process in their own studios. Everyone's going to leave with a new set of ears on what to listen for to make good recordings, how to learn and continue to inquire in the future, and a knowledge base that gives them the skills to make better quality projects in their own studio.

I hope that helps answer some questions.

What's your situation, Bill? What would you like to get out of a week-long workshop?

Hi Bill,

Did you end up signing up for the workshop? The time is fast approaching and I am really looking forward to it. I hope to learn a lot. I've already warned my wife that I will probably be all excited and ready to buy lots of expensive toys after the workshop.

It went great. And the private TLS workshop we just had last week went great. And the addition to our house and my new studio is almost done and going great. And the renovations to the other project studio are going great...

And I've been so busy with it all that I haven't had the time or energy to post the pics and reports yet. : )
