Nope.
Maybe you have a computer virus. I have a mac, which doesn't get many popups at all, which I really like. But, at work they have pc's and we get tons of popups nonstop, but no porn (I work in a school), so there are lots of blocks. In fact, this forum gets blocked at work sometimes. I could read some of a thread then half way down there is a security message.

Almost, but not entirely. I use the latest version of Safari and get pop ups when visiting CNN, Weather Channel, Slate and a couple of others. These are almost always for Netflix and Orbitz but there are others as well. I make it a policy to boycott any company that uses popups.

I'm guessing you have a virus or adware, jacl.

Some of the nastier adware trojans go resident in your startup registry, and will start tossing popups at you the minute you open IE. Most spyware programs won't find them, either.

I've been having problems with popups advertising used German microphones that cost more than my used German car, $600 direct boxes, and new UAD-1 plugins I didn't know I needed when I'm innocently trying to surf porn. It's really getting annoying.

I'd much rather have your problem, Chris.

Although, given the level of hat Big Grinred that my wife has for GAS, she might prefer the porn.

Jacl, prolly got a bunch of adware, especially if you're running Internet Explorer and not using an adware scanner. Here are some things to do and some places to check out to make sure your machine stays pretty clean.

You're going to need to download a couple adware scanners and get some decent anti-virus and anti-spyware stuff going. A good place to frequent would be Geeks To Go. It's got all the downloads that you need and their forums are great. Here's what I run and I haven't had any popups or problems since.

First and foremost, drop Internet Explorer. Use Firefox instead, nevermind all the reasons why, just do it and don't think about it. Find it here: Firefox

Then download Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE from the Geeks to Go Downloads section, here: Geeks To Go Downloads: Everything you'll probably need

Do a search on whatever anti-virus you use and see what the responses are. Two great free AV programs are AVG Free Edition and Avast! Both work great. I use AVG.

You need to download Spywareblaster from the same link.

If you're running MSN Messenger, use something else like Trillian. MSN Messenger is a huge backdoor that adware, spyware and hackers can use.

Download, install and update all those programs, then boot into safe mode by pressing F8 upon your next boot. Run full system scans using Spybot, Ad-aware and your Antivirus. Then use an online scanner like Panda, found here: Panda Scan

You also need to be running a Firewall. The windows Firewall seems to work fine for me and it's unobtrusive. ZoneAlarm makes a good one, but I haven't used it.

If you have more popups or more issues post a HijackThis log in the Geeks to Go forums and they will help you sort everything out.

If you run Firefox for a browser, Spywareblaster, clean your PC with Ad-aware and Spybot, use a decent AV and a Firewall, you should be good.

The Geeks To Go forums are great for those kinds of problems. Check 'em out, run all this stuff and it'll clean you right up.

Good luck.

I'm using SpyBlaster, Adaware and Norton's virus protect w/spyware and internet worm blocking. Has anyone found an advantage to adding Spybot, or is it just extra protection?

If only I knew 1/10th.

Adaware and Spybot essentially do the same thing but one may catch stuff the other won't. Another suite that's good is Ewido, it's found stuff that neither of the other two found.

I definitely agree that switching to firefox is a good idea for anyone on IE (I can't belive people still put up with IE!).

It's been a couple years but when I used Windows I alos dug Avant Browser. Not sure how it is these days but when I used it I regarded it as "IE done right" so to speak. Opera isn't bad either although it didn't run as smoothly on my OS X system as Firefox so that's what I mainly use.
