Everywhere I'm searching has this mic for $599, 8th Street is smoking them by $100. I'm not ready to buy but thought maybe someone else is. This mic intrigues me as a good all purpose, multi pattern condensor.

I don't own one, but I absolutely love the AT4050. It's my favorite mic for my own voice, a baritone; I actually prefer it to a U87. Never tried it on any instruments.

I like the 4033 for its unhyped top-end, but haven't heard the 4050 - anyone know the difference from actually working with both of them?

in the other thread I wrote a short comparison between At4050 and the U87. I tested them, side by side, with Accordion and vocals. The U87, vintage version, was fuller under 240Hz, less top end.
At seems to have a little peak around 8k/12k, but ya can take care of mic placement and use a soft Waves de-esser if it becomes necessary. The U87 had less gain and hey, it costs 3x more!
I use 3 At 4050´s here at my studio, I love them and AT USA is my favorite company.
The At4033 has a slightly smaller diaphragm, I guess is 3/4" versus 1" of the At4050.
The At4060 is also nice, but pro guys suggest substituting the valve that comes bundled with them.

For all percussion needs I find www.midwestpercussion.com has the best prices around.

I don't know about NY specifically but I shop internet anyhow. I'd rather someone bring it to me!

I love my AT4050. All the vocals on my last CD were recorded with one. It's also a very good drum overhead, guitar amps... Not great on acoustic guitar, but I haven't found a LD condenser that sounds good for that. The mic is not as hyped as a lot of the similarly priced Chinese mics. I think it's a bargain at $600; it's a steal at 500.

I've heard the 4050 was great for this application.

Oh, so now you don't like my acoustic sounds, huh? Wink

Seriously, I've used AT 4033, Neumann U87 and TLM193 for acoustic with very good results. I've also used Sm81s and AKG 451s...

I think the coolest combo was a 4033 close and an Sm81 farther back...spread in stereo. And since I now have the TLM193, which is better on acoustic than the 4033, IMO, I'd sub it.

The second best was a matched pair of old 451s. I'm not gonna say it was as natural sounding, but it was purty. Dancing

Warren,
I've played around with the AT4050 on acoustic guitars. Maybe it's just that my SM81 sounds much better for that application, IMO. I should try again, it's been a long time. I've always found small condenser mics to be better on acoustic guitars, but certainly, I've not tried everything!

Popmann - your stuff sounds great so what can I say...

but a combi of at4050 and an sm81 hard panned will sound a little weird, don´t you agree?
You´ll need to dig the at side reasonably, if not it will seem bass comes mostly from one side of the stereo, which sometimes can not be what one aims for...

Sometimes I use 2 At4050´s. With proper mic placement you can avoid the 240HZ buildup, so you mimimize further eq cut.

Alecio,

You are probably right, but I rarely stereo mic acoustic guitars. I know that's against people's religions, but I consistently get similar or better results mono. It may also go back to the days of conserving tracks.

I have one and it gets used for only one thing... guitar cabs. I hate it on vocals and acoustic. It sounds small and sort of dark. Actually sounds terrible on my hand built acoustic and my Takamine. The mic is very popular, and can be made to sound great with lots of eq. I just like using a mic that is going to achieve the sound that is closer to the way Ill end up using it in a mix. Hey but what the hell do I know.

Larry,

Your vocals sound great! Maybe I just havent found the right vocalist for use with the 4050. Still blows huge on acoustic!

I've noticed that most folks, when talking about recording acoustic guitar, do not distinguish between rhythym playing (e.g., strumming ) and fingerstyle playing (e.g., solo celtic, new age, etc.). They are very different sources and mics good for one might not be as good for the other.

Perhaps Larry is refering to rhythyn playing and not fingerstyle. I find that large condensers can be wonderful for fingerstyle guitar.

Stephen,

You are right. I should add that in that application (finger style) the 4050 does a good job as well. A lot of heavy hitting Nashvillains use it regularly.
