Thanks Don for your reply.Sorry, I didn't mention that VTP-1 isn't exactly a budget pre, I paid for it 950$,and it would cost much more by today's standards, you can find all it's specs on www.digitech.com. I don't think I can find anything close to VTP1 for 200$ .

Thanks Flying Fader for your reply.I checked HHB Radius 40, and what strikes me, that in the whole manual I couldn't find out what type of tubes is employed in this device, and how many of them? Seems like marketing department in HHB has censored the manual? And it seems that the whole design of Radius 40 is more digital than vaccume tube. I strongly believe that many manufacturers, including HHB, in order to cut costs, have gone into wrong direction.
And by the way, I haven't seen HHB Radius 40 in the list of equipment on seanoterecording.com.So do you work with Radius 40 in real life or you are just a diehard fan ?(Are diehard fans paid for their devotion?)

Also, not sure how you folks feel about the Focusrite stuff, but recently I've been looking at the Voicemaster Pro. Any chance you might be able to test that one?

Or more to the point, any Focusrite stuff. I have always been a fan...

Estradin,
We do NOT have a radious 40 as part of the sea note gear, I used them at the studio I was at previously and on a few occasions while doing projects at other studios and quickly became a fan. We DO however have a radious 40 here at sea note as part of the listening sessions. I specifically requested that Dan try to get one in for the comparisons and he came through as always. As far as being "paid" or compensated in any way by any manufacturer - I have LOST endorsement deals since becoming envolved with the listening sessions. None of the manufacturers or distributers of any of the equipment used in theses sessions have given us anything other than their time and (much appriciated) "temporary" use of their gear for the sole purpose of these comparisons. Besides, if I were paid by the manufacturer would I have posted how quickly I determined there were many OTHER pres available for less money that were just as good? Think about it. The fact that we all here have to remain totally nuetral in our posts does not allow us to show favortism towards any one brand, and the thrill of getting to use all this great gear day in and day out is payment enough for me. I mean, who in their right mind wouldn't love to sit in a comfy studio all day playing with some of the coolest gear on the market without having to drop wads of cash on it? I am a fortunate soul ! Besides, it also has given me the outlet to discuss and learn about all kinds of gear through other people such as yourself and that in itself is a value that has no price.

Enjoy your day Smile

Estradin, I found some info on the Digitech VTP-1. Looks like it might be pretty snappy except for the 18-bit A/D converters. Do you have to use the A/D out or does the VTP-1 also have XLR outs?

Dot,
The VTP-1 does have analog outs. If I'm not mistaken ( which wouldn't suprise me much Eek ) it also has send and return points before the outputs so you can use additional processing in line if you want to use the digital outs. Thats a cool feature. Hope I'm not thinking of something else. I'm pretty sure the VTP-1 is the one.

I would like to see/hear some other tube DI's - how about Anthony DeMaria Labs, Aguilar, Bellari, Demeter, and Manley?

I'm not just interested in how they work for bass guitar, but also for guitar (with Pod), and synths/keys too.

soulsamurai, we've got the Vipre and the H Series Demeter tub pre among others. We'll also be doing DI units at some point in a few months.

I second the Pendulum recommendation. Dunno that you need a Quartet, a MDP-1A would be fine. Actually a MDP-1C would be better. First the pre in the MDP is the same pre as in the Quartet. Second the MDP-1C has two channels with different front end transformers. I have the MDP-1A, where both channels have the same Jensen tranny, not the custom one. I've never heard the custom wound tranny, which is supposed to accent the mids.

I'd also recommend the Rane DMS 22, which is a very good pre for the price (plus it has eq and a stereo summing bus).

So, where's the RME QuadMic? Under $600 street price for 4 very decent mic preamps in a box the size of a single ch Grace 101. And it can be powered by anything from sunlight to hamster power (very useful on location).

Oh, and there are these fairly inexpensive modular preamps from Canada called Sage Electronics. Don't know much about them, but they have this really cool wood faceplate. What the hell, worth checking out....
