Well...I just went and relistened to all the "Abby vox" comparing mics and preamps in Session 1 and I have say, there are some pretty noticeable differences between the mics. Take a listen to all the mics through the John Hardy. Some mics were brighter, more sibilant, like the SE Electronics and the C3000; the SolidTube was smooth and a trifle dark in comparison. The B3 didn't seem to have the HF grain that the C3000 did, and wasn't as sibilant as the SE, to my ears.

Just a quick "for instance", anyway...maybe take another listen and see if you hear what I'm hearin'...my point is, I do notice differences. Some are subtle; some are really striking (listen to Abby vox through the John Hardy on the SolidTube versus the SE Electronics or the C3000 and see what I mean).

Also, I think what you're lisitening thorugh makes a big difference. If I monitor out of the digital out on my 'puter through my KRK monitors using the converters in my Rumour, or if I listen through my Grado SR225 'phones, for instance, I'll notice a hell of alot more detail differences than if I'm listening through, say, my Sony V-600s (blech) or computer speakers.

Another thing I've noticed about critical listening and spotting details and subtleties...your mood. Relax! Kick back! Set the volume to a comfortable, but not-too-soft level. Puff one if that's your thing. Zone in and listen. I've gone into mixing or listening sessions all keyed up, wired on too much coffee, all stressed out...you wouldn't believe what you miss.
